FRESNO WOMEN TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!

October 31, 2002
In a powerful statement opposing violence against women, 100's of men and women demonstrated at the CSU-Fresno campus yesterday. The coalition of student and community groups listened to speakers and marched through the campus, united under the banner to TAKE BACK THE NIGHT.
Speakers called on the crowd not to tolerate domestic violence in any form. Several speakers from the CSUF and Fresno Police Departments responded with statistics and insisted that they are making violence against women a high priority. The police were given a lot of time by the event organizers to tell participants what a great job they are doing to stop domestic violence and how women can prevent themselves from being victims. It was probably a good strategy to put the police in the position of telling the community how seriously they take this issue.
TAKE BACK THE NIGHT was sponsored by the Women’s Alliance on campus. There were numerous literature tables set up by both campus and community groups. Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, United Students Against Sweatshops, The Fresno County Green Party, the Campus Peace and Civil Liberties Coalition, and the National Organization for Women were all very visible.
After a two hour rally in the “Peace Garden,” listening to speeches, a poetry jam, and music by the local group Waddama, the crowd was ready to march. They held a spirited march throughout the campus to take the message to the dorms and beyond. This event is held annually in Fresno.
