Shrub's Speech - More of the Same
by devidas 7:09pm Thu Aug 22 '02 (Modified on 8:27pm Thu Aug 22 '02)
"We arrested people, about 2500 so far, and about an equal number who have not been so lucky. They don't value life like we value life," President Bush says at speech in downtown Portland as crowd laughs.
Yes, he really did say that. His speech was more of what you'd expect at a rah rah fund raiser.
He started off urging people to keep Smith in office, claiming that Smith is a big environmentalist. He continued on the riff he's been using lately about how current forestry policy allows for kindling buildup in our forests while allowing litigation procedures from preventing a "common sense forestry policy" from executing. "We want people to express their opinion but not ought to use that privilege to tie up good common sense policy so that the forests will burn." Yes, that is the way he talks.
He then went on about the recent education bill. And then he went on about his new trade authority that Smith helped to give him
It was then that he talked about justice and 9/11 and his whopper. First he continued with his old "Either you're with us or you're with them" riff as being the doctrine of the first war in the 21st Century. Then came his first big whopper: "We arrested people - about 2500 people so far - and an equal number who have nobeen so lucky (crowd laughs). They don't value life like we value life - that's not the way they think."
Not missing a beat he used this reasoning to justify the largest increase in "defense" spending since the Reagan administration. He added, "I want our troops well trained and well paid. They deserve the absolute best from our goverment." I guess if the nature of war (people w/ nothing to gain and the most to lose are used as pawns by those with the most to gain and the least to lose) and the history of secret testing on our soldiars is the absolute best from our government... oh, wait, and a little bit of cash too. Yes, on cash, he had problems pronouncing "entrepreneurial" when he went on about how he's helping to create a climate positive to entrepreneurs.

Calling from Broadway, an IMC reporter reports more pepper spray used on the crowd. He hands the phone to someone in the crowd: they just pushed a bunch of people and sprayed us.
Its still going strong.

Notwithstanding the denial of Gulf War Syndrome, the victims of agent orange, and the other abuses of enlisted personnel, here's what a U.S. veteran has to say about the government's treatment of soldiers.

Police reaction to Portland protest by Lisa Thomas 7:03pm Thu Aug 22 '02 wearingpurple [at] yahoo.com
This will backfire. Even our most ostrich-like citizens are not going to stand for rubber bullets being shot in crowds with babies in strollers. This will hopefully wake people up as to what kind of people are running our country and how much closer to a police state we are moving.

I saw it with my own eyes by Randy 8:00pm Thu Aug 22 '02
I was between 5th and 6th on the sidewalk. Maybe the ones in front were warned to move, but I didn't hear any warning. It had been a peaceful protest. Suddenly the police came forward spraying pepper spray. A man nearby with an infant in a backpack got hit real good. The baby's face was so red I thought it had quit breathing. We pounded on the door at Carl's Jr. asking for water, but they had locked up. From the other direction came cop cars through the crowd and rubber bullets were fired at those closest to the cars. I kept retreating but the cops kept spraying. Lots of people were sprayed including the camera man from Channel 2 KATU. Some of us ended up across the street at Standard Insurance and used the fountain and pool.

GOD BLESS PORTLAND by On Jacob's Ladder 9:48pm Thu Aug 22 '02
Thank you Portland for sending the message loud and clear! I thought the sheeple of this country too comfortable, too stupid, too crass to really care about what is happening here. We can never again ask "How did the German people let it happen?" Wake up - if we do not take to the streets we are letting it happen here. Even Gore (ol'"I'll fight for you" Al) ran and hid under a rock...Taking it to the streets is the only way - there is no other way - hey, Ostrich, do you think writing your Congressperson is the way to do it? They are owned by someone else, not by thee and me...The few who are not don't last (think Anita McKinney). Do you think the ballot is the way? Have you forgotten Florida? They will only "count" the votes they want to count. The only hope we have is in the streets...In closing, a historical messsage for you: "Why of course the people don't want war ... But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship ... Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." -Hermann Goering, Nazi leader, at the Nuremberg Trials after World War II

now kids. step back and take a minute to think.
it looked wonderful on the news. freaked out high pitched fat girls bumping chests with cops and screaming, quit it, quit it, when the cops bumped back.
protest and rally is your right. bumping a cop on purpose and expecting to be safe from being bumped back is silliness. i mean look at those guys. theyre built for bumping. and all you have is that high pitched shakey yell. just bump each other and let the cops watch you. hey heres a idea. build real support and elect a anarchist mayor and chief of police. oops, sorry, that would require the majority support of your community. but you dont have that, i know, sorry. happy busted heads kids.

WAY TO GO PORTLAND!!!!
This was so amazing! Portland has the courage! I feel so bad to look at that woman getting swallowed up by the storm troopers . . . she's so brave to be at that place, holding her sign, being swallowed up.
We Love Portland!
Let's see if IAC gets inspired to move on the barriers now . . . not.

"Supporters of Bush in formal attire were jostled and taunted by protesters as they arrived for the fund-raiser. After elbowing their way through the crowd of demonstrators, the VIPs were checked by Secret Service agents before they were allowed inside the hotel."
There's no point in this. If youre going to protest Bush then protest. But to have "jostled and taunted" those arriving at a fundraiser is childish at best.
"The melee erupted after police ordered about 500 protesters to move from a barricaded area."
No reason for a melee to have erupted. They were there to protest. When the police ordered them back they should simply have obliged. They weren't being prevented from protesting nor were their freedoms being usurped they just needed to move back. No big deal. We arent playing one-ups here. Move back a little. Keep protesting.
These people do more to damage themselves by not thinking ahead than anyone could possibly plan for.

And when the redcoat gun grabbers ordered the Minutemen at Concord and Lexington to disperse, the Minutemen should have complied.
Yeah, right.
Yeah, right.
The Minutemen were an armed militia ready to die for the birth of a new country. These people in Portland were simply protesting no more no less. They stood nothing to gain by holding their position. They were not ordered to stop protesting. Should these people take up arms to fight and they are told by the ones whom they are going to fight they should dispurse that would be the time to stand and be counted and would be parallel to the Minutemen at Concord and Lexington.

Smashy gets a hard on when the cops bully old ladies. Shows you how retarded this element of the right is. They feel big and tough aligning themselves with power, ie., corporations, cops, pentagon, CIA, warmongering, etc. How brave is that?
This is just a reflection of their own feelings of inadequacy, cowardliness, and fear. So easy to manipulate. They've never stood up to power before, and feel it makes them more of a man to mock those that do. It's really sad and pathetic. It's like the little guy on the playground that worships the school yard bully.
The real hero, of course, is the one that finally stands up to the bully.
Down through history, there have always been knuckledraggers like this, who are more than happy to attack those who stand up to the power structure. They're just ignorant thugs, and really have no place in a democracy.
Smashy. I suggest you go to Columbia, join a right wing, US funded, CIA trained, death squad, and murder some little brown leftists for oil. Man, down their, you'd have the time of your life.
