Several hundred ILWU workers and there supporters gathered at the Federal Building in Oakland 8/12/02.

The theme of the rally was "Bush stay out of this labor issue".

Labor Bureaucrats and organizers and elected officials alike, took the mic to denounce Bush, Taft-Hartley and federal intervention at a time when they can have great influence. Indeed PMA is dragging their feet, likely because of getting the nod from bush.

What was said here today, amounts to "a line drawn in Oakland". A world-wide shutdown of ports and transportation is in the works, just as is "the bush's et al" plan to destroy the IWLU.

I was changeing tape when this speaker was introduced. Could someone please say who he is?

The person speaking is Jack Heyman, a business representative for ILWU Local 10.

He had immediately followed a stirring and very powerful speech by Clarence Thomas (the "real" Clarence Thomas as we like to point out here in the Bay Area), Secretary Treasurer of the ILWU Local 10.

We had a great rally with 1,500 workers from across over 2 dozen unions attending.

That's the best video clip I've seen on an IMC site in a while.

America's own terroist organization headed by Mr Sweeney himself. Big labor unions have gottenout of control from thier original purpose of helping labors work in a safe environment and earn a decent wage with some benifits have tried and still try to get more money than the labor is worth and blame the fed for all the workers problems, hell with the money the unions have taken from the workers alone they could make sure the poorest of their "union brothers" are taken care of and have food on the table but, that would be out of the question because the overpaid union big shots do not give a damm about the worker only the money and the control. It is a damm good thing the military is not UNION or this conuntry would go to total hell in a handbasket. Not only that but the military of this country has more honor, courage and commitment than all the unions put togheter. The union bosses (all of them) are ripping off america and the worker and in a nut shell are practicing terrorism with a pen and paper. Americas workers should fire the unions and start over with a more professional and honorable representation! Those workers who do not see it like that have been hood winked , BS'd and just plain lied too and they need to look objectiveliy at what is really happneing around them and to them.

This is all about politics.

The Democrats have tried every which way but Sunday to push Iraq off the front page of the papers and to try and get the upcoming election focused on the economy. The unions are pissed off that they've given all this money to Democratic candidates over the years and they aren't talking about the economy loud enough. I read an article the other day where a union leader, in a conference with Ted Kennedy, basically told him that if he wanted to find out what would happen if he didn't start talking about the economy and get off the war, look towards LA. Kennedy blew his stack.

Don't think for a second this isn't the union doing what it can in its own way to try and shift the focus from the war to the economy. I'm sure they have grievences they want addressed, but that's a sideline issue. If they can cause several business to close and prices to rise right before the election in order to keep their buddies in the Democratic party in power, this is a small sacrifice compared to the greater rewards down the road. Follow the money.

Anyone who thinks it's anything other than this is getting dupped.

what a brilliant little toadie you are!

I was under the impression that a labor contract had expired and the bosses had locked-out the workers.

now I understand it's all a nefarious plot to get Democrats elected.

thanks for supplying so much incontrovertible evidence!

you're a veritable genius!

now go away.

Good points. Let's see when a breakthough in negotiations takes place, before or after the election.
