The General Myers Protest on Nob Hill
General Myers was speaking at the Commonwealth Club in the Fairmount Hotel. We went to protest and give out fliers.
Basically, there were more police than either protesters or attendees (it seemed)! There really didn't seem to be much interest in seeing a talk by a US General except from hardcore whitte haired flag-lapel-wearing right-wingers. This is a good sign!
We set up our stuff - two people held Carol's excellent banner against the wind, and facing into the entryway of the hotel - and handed out our info. Tons of media showed up and they interviewed Carol. They were generally supportive, took handouts, etc. The cops were also nice, worked with us, asked us questions and explained where they would be, what we could do, etc.
Lots of people were supportive on the sidewalk, even a number of the people going to the talk. I was surprised by the number of the conservative-looking ones who seem to agree that the questions around 9/11 (i.e., why weren't the jets scrambled?) have been covered up.
I handed out a fake interview with Myers in which he proposes shifting money from the military into education.
There was also an excellent earth flag on hand.

Protesting General Myers at the Fairmont Hotel
My thanks to the wonderful activists who joined me at the Fairmont Hotel, yesterday, on such short notice! Thank goodness for Indymedia to make it possible to pull together a protest in less than a week!
We were only eight or nine in number, well outnumbered by the police and the press, but we were able to pass out flyers, hold our signs, including-

I was interviewed by five television Stations, Channel 2, 3, 4, 5, & 7 (I think), Guerrilla News network, Associated Press and Contra Costa Times. Of course the media wanted “sound bites,” so I had to simplify the message and focus on the moment: General Myers was the top acting Pentagon official, during 9-11. A few days after the event, at his Senate Confirmation hearings, when asked about 9-11, he was evasive, lied several times, took no responsibility for the utter failure of the military to protect the U.S., in flagrant violation of “standard operating procedures.” If anyone should have been held responsible for the unprecedented disaster- it was General Myers, but he was instead promoted and responsible for the biggest reorganization of the military in history, ardently pushing the U.S. to militarize space. The War on Terrorism is actually a War of Terrorism against all people, in the U.S. and throughout the world. There is no reason for us to attack Iraq.
I also tried to make the point that the book The War on Freedom, documents how top U.S. officials were meeting with the head of Pakistani Intelligence, before and during the 9-11 attacks. He also had $100,000. wired to Mohamed Atta, named by the F.B.I. as one of the leading hijackers in the World Trade Center attacks. And the head of Pakistani Intelligence, was also the person Bush sent to Afganistan to ask the Taliban to hand over Bin Laden, when Bush didn’t really want Bin Laden, but wanted a war.
I doubt if these are questions that the administration or the media want to raise, but we tried our best to shed some light on the truths that the War Machine would like to hide.
We were very glad that we came. The police were actually quite nice and understanding and asked for our flyers; I think they recognized that we were definitely “the non-violent” ones and that “war” is a threat to all.
I hope to see you all at Livermore on Saturday (I’ll bring lots of banners)-
