Recently there have been a number of articles written on the subject of anti-Semitism. Some of them have sought to distinguish between criticism of the state of Israel and genuine anti-Semitism. A greater number have warned of an apparent alarming rise in attacks on Judaism in Europe so serious that it is reminiscent of the 1930s.
In any debate there is usually a conflict in definition, and this is particularly important when dealing with something as sensitive as racism or religious hatred. An article in the Guardian on Monday 17th June provides an intriguing insight into the confusion surrounding the current discussions on anti-Semitism.
The article in question concerns a rise in Israelis seeking to obtain German citizenship, through a clause in the constitution over Holocaust compensation, for insurance, "should the conflict with the Palestinians worsen."
As background to the situation, the report cites the controversy in Germany over alleged anti-Semitic remarks made by Jürgen Möllemann, the deputy leader of the FDP party, when he compared the Israeli government's actions to those of the Nazi regime. Since his remarks Jewish groups have taken to the streets to call for Mr Möllemann's resignation.
Comparisons between the Israeli government and the Nazis is unwise and unsound, since the Israelis have not (at the time of going to press) exterminated in a systematic fashion an enormous percentage of the Palestinians. Cold-blooded killings, beatings, house demolitions, vandalism, occupation, military assaults, and two historical pushes at ethnic cleansing--yes. Full fledged genocide--no.
However, the comparison is not anti-Semitic. It does not make racist assumptions, nor does it smack of bigotism. Whether you agree with him or not, Mr Möllemann's comments cannot, on their own, be called anti-Semitic.
The Guardian article concludes with the most attention-grabbing section of the piece. It cites a poll undertaken by the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt, in which thirty-six per cent of participants said they would agree with the statement "I can understand very well that some people are unpleasant towards Jews." This was taken to indicate an increase in anti-Semitism, since it was a dramatic increase from 20% three years ago.
I was somewhat startled by this, since I do not consider myself an anti-Semite, yet I can also understand why some are. There are, in fact, a number of reasons. One is the state of Israel, its ideology of racial supremacy and its subsequent crimes committed against the Palestinians. It is because Zionists have always sought to equate their colonial project with Judaism that some misguidedly respond to what they see on their televisions with attacks on Jews or Jewish property.
Secondly, and related to the first point, is the widespread bias and subservience to the Israeli cause in the Western media. Once again, due to the (theologically false) mergence of Zionism with Judaism, unconditional support for the state of Israel in the media can lead some to misguidedly respond with charges of a 'Jewish conspiracy'. Thirdly, European culture has a history of anti-Semitism (as it has also been guilty of racism to other peoples) that has been, and probably still is, embedded in collective consciousness. Its roots can be traced, at least to some extent, to the shameful teachings of many in the Church.
Of course, the common denominator in all forms of racism is the disturbed emotional profile of the protagonist. I do not pretend to be a psychologist, but I imagine factors could be ignorance, a dominant influential personality in their life, low self-esteem and numerous other religious, socio-economic dynamics.
I have just provided a by no means comprehensive list of reasons why "I can understand very well that some people are unpleasant towards Jews." I do not agree with them, but I can understand.
To interpret agreement with this statement as an indication of anti-Semitism is wrong and intellectually flawed. It can only contribute to real anti-Semitism by the creation of hysteria and polarisation that real racists thrive on, whether they are in a slum in Marseille, a dinner party in Berlin, or the Knesset.

If I understand you correctly, what you are saying is that a percieved surge in antisemitism is actually a rise in negative feelings towards the actions of the Israli government and merely polls as if it were a rise in feelings against the jewish ethnicity because of the pervasive confusing of Israel and Jews.
I have many jewish friends who disagree with the actions of the Israeli government, and who feel that violence should not be met with violence. These people too understand why there are negative feelings against Jerusalem.
Just because someone feels that Sharon is leading his people into many more decades of unnecessary, bloody warfare does not mean they feel that Jews are to be despised, and the media needs to start making that distinction.
Disclaimer: I don't agree with the actions of the palestines either. Both sides of the conflict are escalating things far beyond a simmering border dispute.
If Arafat and the PLO hadn't done everything in their power to avoid negotiating with Israel -- or if the Arab States had accepted the UN partition in the first place -- they'd already have their state, and the borders would have been fixed long, long ago. Two states, side by side, safe and sound.
What prevented that from happening? Too many people blindly believing that Israel would, or should, simply go away, or doesn't really exist in the first place (!). It was a miscalculation then and it's even more of a miscalculation half a century later.

All the Arab states have stated that they want peace with Israel (in the latest Arab Summit) and Sharon responded that this meant the destruction of Israel. And in a way it does... Israel was founded in theft and vicious racism and hatred of Arabs. Peace with the Arabs means that Israel will no longer be able to STEAL Arab land, property, homes, and water.
And thus, this would mean the destruction of Israel as Israel survives on theft and war.
The thing you all seem to forget is that, like it or not, zionism is the nationalist representation of the jewish people.
In other words, being Jewish means that you a member of:
- A religion AND
- An ethnic group / race, AND
- A nation
This is not unprecedented in human history. In fact, a case could be made that England and Rome shared this cohesiveness of vision for its people with Israel.
Now, of course there are fringe elements (*maybe* 5%) of the Jewish people who do not accept this, but you can't look to them as "the real jews" because you happen to like their answer on Zionism. Especially if you are not even Jewish.
So, with this in mind, we Jews know what you are talking about when you say that you are anti-zionist. To put it simply, you don't believe that Jews have a right to a cohesive identity as a religion, race, and nation. And that smacks of racism to many of us.
Many jews, zionist ones, don't like one bit that we and our muslim neighbors don't get along. It is a cycle of violence and hatred that just plain sucks, and sometimes we do a piss poor job of extending our hand to try to stop it all.

Whenever you lump all members of a group into a giant indistinguishable mass, and make everything a black and white issue, you are providing an environment conducive to the spread of hatred. To say all who oppose Zionists are anti-semites is doing this, and so is to say all Jews stand in agreement with Zionism.
You make a premise that in no nation in the world can anti-semitism ever be defeated, so there must be an exclusively Jewish state. Is this really true? If all anti-zionists are anti-semites, then the presence of anti-zionist Jews in large numbers within Israel would indicate that not even in the exclusively Jewish state can anti-semitism be wiped out; thus the argument falls flat on its face.
The truth is, in my belief, somewhat more complex. Anti-semitism can be defeated, globally, in time. Until then, Israel must become a secular and multi-cultural state with strong emphasis on combatting racism in all its forms. Anything else merely feeds anti-semitism. Providing not only Jews but Palestinians as well with safety and prosperity in Israel will detract strongly from the cause of Arabs who wish to "drive Jews into the sea"; their fellow Arabs will not listen when they know that this would be detrimental to their own well-being and interests.

"Other IMCs have noted the same pattern. An individual has been identified as the source of spamming/flooding articles to various Newswires. On some, he pretends to be a pro-Palestinian activist by flooding Newswires with stories that obsessively use the term "Zionazi". At the same time, the same person was noticed flooding the Jerusalem IMC with more than 50 copies of some rant about fascism.
We have concluded that this person has no political agenda, other than trying to start arguments and otherwise disrupt IMCs in any way possible, or as it's usually known, he is just a troll. Whether he is being paid to do this is speculation, as the disruptive effect may simply be the way he passes time in his apparently empty life.
Some may not want to hear this, but the tendency to pick sides and refuse to deal thoughtfully with the arguments of those we disagree with creates a climate where low-lifes of which we speak can fester and grow. Using terms such as "Zionazi" and other derogatory ethnic terms can be easily exploited by those who wish disruption, rather than productive dialogue.
Some of the names that this person has used include: American Vet; TruePeace; Special to the IMC; Marat; various Angle-sounding first names, including DAN, big bob, and others. He often favors using all-caps (hence his nickname at at least one IMC of "Caplock Crackpot") and also enjoys the posting of pictures of dead babies when posting reposts of wire service stories. He will often take a wire service story and use find and replace to make changes such as turning all references to Israelis in the original story to such terms as Zionists or "Zionazis". Lest you think he really does support the Palestinian cause, he has also posted false stories meant to cause distress to pro-Palestinian activists and to create the impression, through the obvious falsification of stories, that all such reporting on IMC about Palestine is equally fraudulent.
People should always use caution when reading a story on IMC which is too one-sided to be true and (while not giving wire service stories any more credit than they really deserve) mistrust stories that are uncorroborated by other news sources. Most of all, stories that treat other human beings as less than fully human, should cause doubt in the reader's mind about the veracity of the rest of the information presented. Stories that take the evil done by individuals of one ethnic group and then try to claim that ALL individuals in that ethnic group are somehow less than human are particularly suspect as being nothing more than shoddy propaganda. Sure, some Israelis are evil, but that doesn't mean that all Israelis are evil. Sure, some Palestinians are evil, but not all Palestinians are evil. A story that paints everything in black and white, "good versus evil", is just like the propaganda coming from Bush's lips and should be treated as having about the same credibility."

Secondly, you should notice that this Indybay has been attracting vicious anti-Semitic rants that have been so commonplace we're just taking them in course as part of the atmosphere. I haven't seen anything against Arabs, Blacks, or any other minority group on these boards that were half as nasty as those directed against Jews.
And yes, it is possibile to criticize the Israeli government without being Anti-Semitic. However, I postulate that much of the criticism is motivated by Anti-Semitism, for when other countries do what Israel does, only worse, they receive no criticism and no attention. Why is this? Israel is put to a far higher moral standard than any other nation. Why?
But here's the question I'm most curious about. Some will justify Israel's existance as a Jewish refuge as being due to the fact that the millions of Jews who tried to flee the Holocaust were not allowed into any other country, including the United States. Because they were trapped in Europe and under Nazi rule, millions were murdered. Israel's foundation was to prevent such a tragedy from ever occuring again. It is the one nation on the Earth Jews will always be able to flee to.
This is the reason for it's establishment. If Israel was made multi-ethnic rather than having a decidedly Jewish character, would it still provide such refuge, or would it close its doors similar to the United States?
And finally, here is the problem I have with the argument that Israel should become purely secular. Please address it, because it causes me a great deal of distress.
Why is it that the one Jewish nation on Earth is told to become secular, but there are over forty nations which have Islam as their state religion, yet they are under no pressure at all to become secular? In many of these nations, Jews and Christians are not allowed or are accorded very few civil liberties. But we seldom here anyone telling Saudi Arabia to allow non-Moslems to visit Mecca. Why? Should we not insist that these states stop adhering to a state religion, and become a secular nationality, similar to the United States?
But if not, why should we insist that Israel do so? At least Israel provides refuge to a minority group that has been persecuted for over two thousand years.
The situation with the Palestinians is certainly a problem, I'll be the first to admit. But there are solutions that do not involve ending Israel's character as a Jewish state or refuge. And yes, I question this hostility towards Israel, from people who think the Jews should simply not have a state of their own, and I think there is an argument to make that those who would deny this operate from anti-semitism, and not from a viewpoint for peace or fairness, which is, I believe, what MLK is telling us.

attack only those bearing the distinctive genes. The secret USrael program is
based at the Institute for Biological Research in Nes Tsiona, a small town

Reconciliation Commission"). Foreign Report also says that Israelis have gained
insights into the Arab genetic make-up by conducting research on "Jews of Arab

concerned about the lethal potential of genetically-based biological weapons
that it has opened an investigation. Dr. Vivienne Nathanson, who organized the
research, said: "With an ethnically targeted weapon, you could even hit groups
within a population. The history of warfare, in which many conflicts have an
ethnic factor, shows how dangerous this could be." A spokesman for Britain's

To answer your question though I do not believe in ANY religious state, anywhere. But I have much less of a problem with it if it is a religion which the vast majority of the occupants of that country embrace. I don't really like it, but what are you to do? The main problem with the religious nature of the state of Israel is that a) it is being forced on the native inhabitants and b) it goes entirely against the Declaration of the Foundation of the State of Israel, which guarantees full religious freedom as well as equal citizenship and full civil rights to Palestinians. This has not been observed.
In answer to your question vis a vis Israel as a place of refuge, this argument is false. If the founders had wished Israel to be a true place of refuge and safety they would not have located it in the Middle East, of all places. This region has long been regarded as strategic, and has been well known through the centuries as a place of conflict. No, it was not chosen for reasons of safety, this is a ludicrous argument. It was chosen because of religious zealotry.
In short I can say that I do not agree with the Arab governments any more than I do with Israel. But there is one factor you have overlooked. My country is paying 10 million dollars PER DAY in arms to support Israel, this is coming out of my pocket. If I'm going to pay for something I damn well have a say about it. Now it is true that some money also goes to Arab governments but not on the same scale at all. This is the reason I speak more of Israel. Another reason is that I am simply engaged more on the subject. You yourself are encouraging dialogue on this subject. If I had Britons showing up asking me why is it wrong for the British Army to occupy Northern Ireland I would engage them too, but they don't show up, everyone pretty much agrees, and there is little to discuss.
I've read some Jewish scholars on the Zionism before the establishment of Israel. One wit, Shalom Alachem (author of Tevye the Milkman, which later became Fiddler on the Roof) made the quip that if you have two Jews in one room, you'll have three opinions. The reason the Zionists could agree on Israel as the homeland is because of its deep place within Judaic religion and culture. Jewish origin is from the land, and they were scattered by the Babylonians, and later the Romans. By keeping their culture alive, even away from the homeland, Jewish culture survives to this very day. But an important component was the dream to return to the homeland. When the Jews were freed from Babylon and rebuilt the temple, it was because of this faith that helped them keep their identity and their culture alive. If the Jews merely assimilated into Babylonian society, there would have been no second temple, no diaspora, no Jesus, no Christianity, and the world would be a different place. (I'm not saying better or worse, just different)
Jews have also been a presence in Palestine even during the entire Diaspora, and Jewish roots go back there for at least three thousand years. Jews returning to Israel is like Native Americans being allowed back to their land. Perhaps that's why so many people are against Zionism; they would no doubt be against other aboriginals reclaiming their own land.
The early Zionists had to do some politics to convince Jews around the world to their cause. Let's be realistic, that's what you have to do with such a movement. The unifying theme among Jews around the world: a yearning for the ancestral homeland of Israel- was part of what made immigration inviting. They gathered money and paid exorbitant rates to absentee Arab landlords. Mark Twain wrote about how barren and undeveloped much of Palestine was at this time.
Of course, historical revisionists would like you to believe that the Jews came in en-force and murdered and colonised the Arabs living there, but I don't put too much stock on it. I have seen anti-Zionists come up with the most outrageous claims, with vehement hostility, and I'm never sure what to believe or not. I certainly don't believe the student activists on SFSU when they claimed Jewish students were spies who reported to the South African government. And I don't believe a poster who claimed Jewish scientists were working on a virus that would only attack Arabs but that Jews would be naturally immune to. An absurd notion? Yes, but I have seen it used as an argument online. And yes, I consider it anti-Semitism, as Jews have historically been accused of poisoners. Yeah, it's one slander out of many, but when you see a pattern, you begin to recognize them.
It is true that Israel has had Arab nations and Terrorist organizations devoted to its destruction since even before 1948. Even the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem visited Hitler in Berlin, and wanted to convince the fuhrer to help him transfer Jews from Palestine to Poland, where they could be more easily exterminated.
Remember that word, exterminated? Sometimes a Jew has to balance the risks. Israel may not be so safe now with the suicide attacks- but compared to Nazi Germany, its paradise. And many of the Jews who made Aliya to Israel were fleeing similar situation. The Ethiopian Jews who immigrated under Operation Moses were also facing potential ethnic cleansing; except this time there was a nation willing to pay money and transport them to Israel, simply in the interest of saving human lives. A similar story exists when about 800,000 Jews were expelled from Arab countries, where they've been living for years, because of rising Anti-Semitism. Many had all their property confiscated. You don't hear about them very often, because Israel accepted them. No big tragic stories, no ethnic cleansing. If the Arabs resettled their Palestinian brethren after 1948, you wouldn't have any horror stories of Palestinians still living in camps. But they were deliberately kept out to keep up hostilities.
After reading and hearing much of the Arab/Palestinian rhetoric, I do not believe that a Palestinian state would be secular, or have freedom of religion. I do believe they would massacre Jews, and I don't think that's acceptable. If they were working to stop anti-Semitism in the world, to convince me that there's no need for Israel's refuge, maybe I would consider that. But instead it seems like they instigate anti-Semitism, teach it to their children in textbooks, and get activists here in San Francisco Indbay that post up anti-Semitic threads that would make Hitler proud. That only tells me there's a greater need for Israel, not less. Because its one country that will defend its Jews rather than turning a blind eye, like the world did during WWII.
Finally, Jews are still a majority in Israel, so I think your comment about Jews being a minority group ruling a country is inaccurate. Yes, there are concerns that if Jewish birth rates decline and Arab birth rates continue at their high rate (and especially if all the Palestinians became Israeli citizens under a right of return- which probably won't happen because no sane nation can be expected to accept the patriation of people dedicated to its own destruction) then perhaps Jews would indeed become a minority, and it would approach an apartheid situation. But that day has not yet come.
Furthermore, Jews are in the majority, but Christians, Moslems and Druze still enjoy certain rights, including representation and voting. There are Arab members on the Knesset, and Sharon is the first prime minister to have an Arab member of his cabinet. Are there Jews in positions of power in Arab nations? A Jewish cabinet member in Iraq? No. That is the difference between the Jewish state and the Islamic states. In fact, I think only two of the Islamic states are Democratic, and neither of them are Arab. The rest are monarchies, theocracies, or dictatorships. And common people don't often have many rights in a monarchy.
Yes, things are not perfect. There is a discrepancy between Jews and the Israeli Arabs. Some discrimination, some prejudice. But you know; the same could be said of the United States. In the end, you have to talk in terms of degrees; the world just never becomes perfect, and utopia is an ideal because it is unachievable. But I think Israel has done pretty well in its 50 years. How were blacks doing in America when the United States was fifty years old?
And Palestinians, though they have been used by pawns by the Arab brethren, and are stuck with dreadful leadership, do need to accept that the use of terrorism is responsible for many of their current problems. If Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights movement involved the random murder of whites, I doubt it would have gotten very far. There would have been a lot of repression, fear, and it would have made the real movement (which was difficult enough as it is, with firehoses, police dogs, tear gas, and yes, death) resemble a cakewalk. But Dr. King realized that you must live up to certain ideals that your oppressors claim to live up to, that two wrongs never make a right.
Then again, another reason for Terrorism may be that Palestinians still hope to defeat Israel in a war of conquest, i.e. destroy it altogether. I will never accept this. I remain absolutely unconvinced that a Palestinian state will hold any rights for Jews. I am much more convinced that it would be a place of terror for Jews, of murder. No Palestinian advocate has succeeded in assuaging these concerns of mine. I don't think any have tried. Two states may work. But destroying Israel to make a 43rd Islamic state and expecting Jews to be safe there... I'm sorry, I just don't buy that.
I'm afraid I have to agree with you here. Which is why I do not support a two-state solution. This is what was done in India/Pakistan. Widespread violence was the immediate and lasting result to the degree that now they do nuclear tests near each other's borders for the sheer purpose of intimidation.
You can indeed say the same things about the United States, especially and particularly in regard to its own native population. Things are never perfect. But you have to admit, although there are random hate crimes between ethnic groups in America, it does not approach the same level of organized and institutionalized violence we see in less secular nations. And on the native american question, this is an issue I have been active in during the past and I fully support the notion of self government. In fact the native Americans have even better claim to their land than most, seeing as there was no basis for invasion and even now, legal treaties still exist which guarantee their land and sovereignty which have been totally ignored.
2000 years is an awfully long time. In that time, homelands have changed alot. The Gypsies are said to be descendants of the Romans; but I don't think the world is going to allow them to create a new Roman state in Italy any time soon. They too died in the Holocaust and continue to be persecuted; it is a pretty easy claim to make that they are even now routinely targeted by European governments to a much greater degree than Jews. This I oppose. But I do not accept the notion they need their own state to preserve their cultural identity. Think 'Quebec'. This is a great example of a people who do not have their own national government and yet manage to preserve their culture and way of life and are fiercely independant. I could also name Scotland here. Nothing is ever perfect, and there is certainly rivalry even in these places, but Scots and French Canadians have a safe home without having a national government of their own.
Israel, if it was intended primarily for the purpose of a secure refuge against anti-semitism, should have been located elsewhere. If that was only a secondary purpose, and religion was a primary purpose, then the idea makes more sense. But religion, though everyone should be free to practice it, has no innate justification to override the civil rights of nonbelievers.
Your analogy with native americans is stretched. It could be more easily drawn to represent the Palestinians.
However - all this being said - the fact remains that Jewish people have been born in Israel and in my mind have every right to continue to live there. This is why I favour a secular and multi ethnic state with a particular focus on freedom of religion.
One thing I hear from you and I have heard repeatedly is the question of the rapid increase of the Palestinian population. This is where the Israeli government has most illustrated the foolishness of its policies. In denying access to employment, education and general opportunities, they have increased the Palestinian birthrate. There is a well known correlation between the birthrate and the availablity of education and economic opportunities. Restoring to Palestinians full participation as equal citizens in Israel, and I mean this in a social as well as a legal sense, would slow the Palestinian birthrate and ensure a Jewish presence in the Holy Land. This was most certainly understood when the Declaration was written, but it seems to be something that has fallen out of the Israeli consciousness.
As far as Israeli armed reprisals and violent acts of Palestinian resistance go, I can say only one thing: the logical outcome of 'an eye for an eye' is blindness for all.
True. I believe it was Britain that decided to form the India/Pakistan partition, and deliberately separate the Hindus and Muslems. It's quite similar to how they divided Israel and Palestine, or the Jews/Arabs. And it seems to have worked just as well. A cynic may say that a motivation of Britain's partition is to deliberately force conflict on their former colonies, so as they will never be able to usurp British supremacy. And unfortunately, we've inherited the situation, so all we can do is try to find a way to fix it.

It is true that the 2000 year dispersion is a long time, but remember the Jews never totally left; there were always Jews still in the land, and there were many years when the majority of people living in Jerusalem were Jews, even before Herzl. . Should all discriminated groups have their own states? It is a difficult question. African Americans had Marcus Garvey, who advocated a sort of African American Zionism. The Kurds, too, would very likely do much better with a state. I don't know if the Gypsies have that sort of national thinking, but if they did, it could at least be worth considering, before throwing it out wholesale.
We will probably agree that minority groups should be free of persecution. Since this seems to be impossible, perhaps a minority group should have a place they can flee to in the event of a truly traumatic discrimination. When people ask me why the Jews need Israel, when Jews are able to exist rather normally in the United States, I remind them that the U.S. closed its doors to Jews desperate to escape the Holocaust. Yes, once inside the U.S.A. the Jews were safe, but getting there from Europe proved nearly impossible, and this led to the deaths of millions. Israel's open doors to Jews fleeing persecution is truly unique in this case.
Again, it is possible that Israel would never have been founded if it wasn't for the feelings of remorse when the reality of the Holocaust made itself known. This was when the great need was made visible.
Also, about the Scots, maybe I'm not as well-read on this as I should be, but is their situation different from that of the Irish? And I know the Irish have certainly fought England for their own autonomy, and their own state.

The truth is probably a little of both. A refuge against Anti-Semitism was the main purpose of Herzl's secular brand of Zionism, and I think he was open to the idea of temporary safehouses or nations elsewhere in the world. But I think he found that the idea of returning to Israel to be a much more popular idea, for it drew the attention of the religious, the orthodox that may never have cared to move to South America. It is likely the two tied themselves together, since both the secular and religious Jews needed each other's support to make the dream possible.
And again, I point out that non-Jews in Israel have far more freedom of religion than non-Muslems in the Arab nations. Indeed, did you know that Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ, and once a home to many Christians, is now nearly empty of Christians, ever since it came under the rulership of the Palestinian Authority? Still, fewer people seem to be interested in religious discrimination under Islam than they are about discrimination under Jews, even when the former is more wide-spread.

The Palestinians have the dubious honor of being offered a homeland and rejecting it, saying that it wasn't enough. I don't want to get into the specifics of the Camp David accords right now, but you have to admit that- at least- the offer was made.
Keep in mind that before the partition plan offered by the UN, Britain was offering the Jews ALL of Palestine as a Jewish homeland, in return for their support during the first world war. But then they gave 70% of it to the Hashemites, which became Jordan. And during partition, even more of it was taken away to give to the Arabs, leaving the Jews to found a state on the 1948 boarders. Even so, with a fraction of what they were expecting, the Jews agreed to the plan. And if the Arab nations never attacked, Israel would still be in those 1948 boarders. But it was attacked in an attempt to wipe it out, and it captured territory in these wars, bringing it to the size it is now... which is still pretty small, especially if you consider Jordan to be part of the ancestral Jewish land.
A quote I heard is that if the earlier Zionists had Yassir Arafat (who said no to Camp David) instead of David Ben-Gurion (who agreed to the partition) then there never would have been an Israel. It is also for this reason that I feel Arafat has done incredible harm to the people he represents, and the Palestinians will probably have great difficulty getting a state as long as he leads them. He's rejected opportunities to become a statesman long before Camp David, and I think he simply has no interest in anything but conquering all of Israel. It's hard to negotiate with someone like that; many Israelis feel there's nothing they can do anymore until there's a new Palestinian leader, someone who might be willing to compromise.

This is actually a better description of Israel than you might know. Things have been getting harder during the intifada. And there are some rights to continue with. But when people say that Israel is a Jew-only state where gentiles have no rights at all, I want you to know this: They are lying to you. It is simply not true.

There is a difficulty about granting widespread Palestinian citizenship. Polls have indicated that a majority of Palestinians, especially in the territories, are still dedicated to the destruction of Israel. Can you really expect to grant citizenship to a large group of people seeking to destroy the very country they're being patriated to?
Many economic and educational opportunities for the Palestinians have fallen greatly during the intifada. This is unfortunate. But I'm not sure how it's to be avoided. When there are people trying to commit acts of terror, and suicide bombers strike regularly, its only natural for a nation to defend its people. Much of this defense has been taking its toll on the Palestinian economy, which has been fueling more Palestinian anger. But opening all the boarders and receiving a large-scale attack by more bombers is not a solution either.
This is another real tragedy of the situation. Because some terrorist organizations are opposed to compromise on any level, they time their strikes to match any diplomatic breakthrough. Sharon goes to Washington, and a suicide bomber hits Tel Aviv. The IDF frees a city, a suicide bomber strikes, the IDF retakes the city. And there may be some Israelis who do the same thing too, having obtained a "them or us" war mentality.
But that's one of the goals of terrorism. I do a terrorist strike on my enemy, to make him retaliate. When he retaliates, my people blame the enemy, drawing more to my cause. If my enemy makes peace, I strike so he'll retaliate rather than making peace. And since I operate invisibly, my enemy doesn't know where to find me to exact a direct retribution, yet has to defend himself somehow. It's a game that brings many victims.
Terrorism will definitely need to stop before Israelis can stop being paranoid about Arabs. And it will need to stop before anyone can imagine a two state solution that can coexist peacefully. I've read people who object to surrendering the settlements, or any land, as a response to terrorism, for that would only be a message that terrorism works, and if you want more, all you need to do is attack more civilians. This is a valid point. A Palestinian state that is founded on negotiation and peace would be far easier to live with than a Palestinian state founded on terrorism.
Sometimes I worry that the only purpose of a Palestinian state will be to better stage attacks on Israel. This can't be allowed. You can't ask Israel to surrender territory, only so that territory will be used to attack her. There needs to be a way to develop trust between the two groups, so that a territorial concession is no longer seen as giving away a military vantage point.
And when I consider the possibilities of building trust between these two groups, I get really pessimistic. I can't trust people who put up posts on Indybay claiming that Jews are born with horns on their heads, and that Bar-Mitzvahs are when Jews are indoctrinating into the international Jewish conspiracy... and when I protest such nonsense, I'm told that it's just "satire" and to have a "sense of humor" about stuff that is "close to the truth."

Ireland was colonized by the British and fought numerous uprisings eventually winning independance in 1916, except for Northern Ireland (Ulster Province) which remains an embattled region to this day. Scotland on the other hand is part and parcel of the United Kingdom and has not had any need to resort to violent opposition for several centuries now, though this was not always the case. This was mainly due to the fact that although subjugated, the English never really tried to settle in Scotland. Some will say religion, but they are putting the cart before the horse, because if the English had settled in Scotland, it is almost impossible to imagine the Scottish would ever have become Protestant.

See what they did instead? See how the policy in Canada differs from that in India or South Africa? Anti-Semitism is not a monopoly of the rightwing. Historically, it had its stem from both ends of the political spectrum. Conservatives often accused Jews of being "muckrakers" and "Socialists." And Leftwingers insulted Jews for being "bankers" and "capitalists." The balancing act, I think, comes to deciding who's being anti-semitic at the moment, and working with those who are not.
I've seen a lot more support for Israel and the Jews coming from Republicans these days than from the Leftist Socialists in San Francisco. And it is scary, let me tell you. Like I said, minority groups do survive well in North America. But the problem is getting them INTO North America when they're in trouble. Case in point is, again, the Jews who were trying to escape from Nazi Europe. The United States quota for Jews ended the year unfilled. In spite of how desperate Jews were to escape, the U.S. made themselves an almost impossible haven.
This is a serious question; is the U.S. or any other secular country obliged to allow immigrants in who are fleeing persecution? Many times the United States has kept them out, sometimes with horrific results. This is one reason Israel set itself as a haven for Jews. I'm not sure what other minority groups have as havens. Maybe some have them in mind, some don't. Some of my African American friends pointed out to me that they would probably have a lot of trouble immigrating. As for myself, I know I can go to Israel in a pinch if there's an emergency. But if Israel disappeared, and the U.S. and the rest of the world became murderously anti-semitic, I'd be in trouble.

Well, the Irish, Italians, and many other ethnic minorities suffered discrimination when the first came to the U.S. But I think it generally only lasted a generation or two before their descendants assimilated to the melting pot, and now I don't think there's any significant discrimination facing these groups.
But some groups have faced a history of discrimination that lasts throughout generations, such as Jews, Blacks, and Native Americans. It's harder for this second group to assimilate fully into their culture. There's been progress, and some are as full in the melting pot as an immigrant from Britain, but it hasn't been universal. Fortunately also, there haven't been any widescale genocides among these groups for a few generations. (Yeah I know, that's probably scant comfort to the Native Americans who can remember just a few further generations back)
It seems to be the real dangerous persecutions, of Rwanda, Bosnia, Serbia... which are genocidal in their scopes are the types that may need state-oriented solutions. Widescale murder is a bit worse than everyday discrimination. True, they're both ugly. But there is a question of extent.

Again, there are Israeli Arabs who are full citizens, with voting rights and seats in the Knesset, and a member of Sharon's cabinet.
But I think the problem we're facing is this question:
If it is acceptable to give a state to a group facing genocide, than surely the Jews have earned Israel. Many are concerned that if widescale citizenship was given to the refugees in the territories, then Jews would become the minority in their own state. And then you would have a new problem.
Either A) Israel loses its Jewish character, is no longer a refuge, and becomes a secular state. And the next time Jews face persecution, maybe Israel will close its doors along with the U.S.
Or B) Israel maintains its Jewish character, and Jews continue with the leadership, leaving Palestinians as a political minority with a numerical majority, and then it does begin to resemble an Apartheid situation, with a numerical minority ruling the country. (kinda like Jordan)
I don't find either of these acceptable.
People on this site will undoubtably argue that the Palestinians are facing genocide, a holocaust. I do not agree with this assessment. In the two years of the intifada, fewer Palestinians died than the number of Jews who died in one day of the Holocaust. That is not genocide. There are indeed problems, discriminations, inequalities, but not in the proportion of the Holocaust.
But if Palestinians are a persecuted minority who deserve their own state, then by all means give it to them, and let's have a two state solution. Palestinians can immigrate to Palestine, Jews to Israel, everyone has a place to go to build their own lives. It seems simple enough to me.
The only problems will probably be (what else) but stupid land arguments like India and Pakistan over who has Kasmir. I sure don't want to see another war over something like this. If only there could be a compromise. Israel can give up the settlements, Palestinians can give up the right of return to Israel, and just work on building a state.

Still, the purpose of founding the U.S. and the purpose of founding Israel were for very different reasons, with different backgrounds of people. It's hard for me to imagine Israel going the U.S. or Canadian routes. The North American nations have certain advantages of their own that made their situations a lot less tense.

You are definately right about the difficulty in getting refugees into America. This is why the left often supports less restrictive immigration policies, while the right opposes them.
Aryan Nations et al has no crediblity atm. But they are getting more sophisticated. The organizations are changing names. They are staying away from things which link them to Nazis, such as swastikas. They are promoting an idea that all races should live apart in national enclaves. They are trying to find some new ground to hold and the Palestine issue is causing their numbers to swell. Groups like Aryan Nations itself aren't really a threat and have no real future except as inner circles of the far right. It's the front groups I'm worried about.

you said this in response to my observation of the French in Canada. The only problem is, the French never were assimilated. They even have a different religion than the English Canadians. And there is still rivalry. The French have a separatist movement which for a brief time in the 1970s spawned terrorist units resulting in a state of martial law. But there were only 2 casualties assassinated by the FLQ group, and government tactics didn't require any deaths. Why? Because the FLQ never had credibility with their people, they had no real cause in their nationalism. If you want a single state of Israel and no more Palestinian problem, this is what you need to get to. And by that I mean full citizenship for all Palestinians, full language rights in the government and full representation, not just a few token members in the Knesset. Of course, its getting there that's the catch.
But this can be done too. Employment for Palestinians is where you start. Bring more and more alongside. Have them work alongside Jews and Christians. They will go home to their communities and they will be wealthier than their neighbours. They will begin to identify with what Israel offers them. There will be some reprisals, which is why it needs to be done on a large scale. The scale is VERY important for you need a large group, an entire new class in Palestinian society. When the reprisals come against the Palestinian workers, this is the beginning of victory. Israel will now be controlling and determining the nature of the conflict, instead of reacting and defending. The extremists will be on the defensive, guarding their own support base. And you can then say to Palestinians, "look, its not us keeping you from getting wealthy and having the things you want. It's Hamas keeping you in poverty. When you try to make a buck they punish you." A new class of Palestinians emerges, likely resentful of extremists, likely more secular. This group gains power and influence. As it does, extremists are pushed further and further to the margins. You keep the program up; a steady stream of increased rights, wealth, and political representation, metered out (not all at once). With each new development the extremists are forced once again to justify their cause. And in this you are in control of the conflict, you are picking the battlefields, you are choosing the provocations. At the moment it is the extremists always choosing the battles, always the ones putting Israel on the defensive. I'm sure you can appreciate that in the long run it is not how powerful you are, but how much control you have over the conflict that matters. The defensive side can never really gain ground, only preserve what it has already got. It cannot win except by being 100% succesful each and every single time.
I think Israel has tried this tactic before. But it really hasn't kept it up. I would say that the attempts have been too little and too weak to make a difference and this is probably alot due to pressure from the Israeli right wing. On that I have no suggestion except to fight them, hard. Everywhere I look at the right wing, in every country, I see blind emotionalism. Its a hard thing to counter. The advantage is that it performs very poorly, economically, and this is where you strike, not on moral grounds.
You say on giving citizenship that Jews would become a minority in their own state. Well, they already are then, aren't they? You can't become a minority by a political act. They are just a minority enjoying greater representation to the extent that they have a majority of the representation, currently. Within the entire state of Israel though, they are a minority already. Even if you opt for a two-state solution, the Palestinians' higher birthrates will result in a Jewish minority, eventually. This doesn't seem to be something you can avoid by any means short of attempting genocide. You'll just have to live with that. What can be done? There is of course a solution. (1) take efforts to reduce Palestinian birthrates with education and employment. (2) create an attractive Israel for Diaspora Jews to immigrate to - right now most of them are probably thinking, "gee, some refuge - maybe if I'm lucky I won't even be blown to bits".
I don't agree with the assesment of Palestinians facing a Holocaust either. Not at the moment though it is possible in the future. But I don't find their situation tolerable, and I can understand why some people exaggerate the situation, when apologists are making light of it. Its all a question of balance.

Good question. Some speculate that it was a plan to double the Anglo empire. I don't think so, though I do believe the American Revolution could have been put down if the British had a mind to do that. I think the British at the time looked at America and they saw a big problem. No gold, no furs. Alot of natives on the far side of the mountains and colonists eager to slaughter them despite treaties. A political and legal mess. Too many Dutch and French and Germans and Irish, all harboring resentments. Alot of problems; few benefits. I think they just didn't know what to make of it, and decided that it was not worth a whole lot of trouble, looking at it at the time. I think they also harboured a belief that in time the Americans would want back in to the Empire. Another problem was slavery. I think they foresaw enough to know that in the future this would be a problem too. Basically, building America was going to be a dirty, bloody job what with the Indians and the slave question, on top of the rebels, and the English have never shown a propensity for getting involved in these sorts of situations. Their Empire was built on quick and overwhelming victories, not on long, protracted and difficult occupations. I think what they envisaged was a Renaissance version of Vietnam awaiting them in America, complete with guerilla warfare, political problems and a general compromise of the Empire as a whole. So they let it go.
In comparing Israel's future to three paths - Canada, South Africa, or India/Pakistan - I was speaking purely on the ethnic front. I think that is a question that is largely the same no matter where you are. And Canada is in some ways a fairly appropriate comparison - a small, tiny (by population) place, a proxy bastion on a hostile continent, with a mix of two disparaging ethnicities, one loyal and one oppressed. You have to remember that for many many years things were not so friendly between America and Canada; there were some pretty vicious wars fought actually. The only real major difference is that the hostile neighbour - the US - was not of the same ethnicity as the oppressed group in Canada (the French). Still there are enough similarities that I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

Hey, I didn't say I was THAT much of a fan of Bush. I'd say there's still at least a 95% that I'll vote against him in 2004.
It's interesting to me to hear your charges, that he's using Jews as cannon fodder in this battle, whereas the latest troll article on exterminating the Jews claims Jews are never killed in any war. From the way you summarize it, it is America manipulating Israel, rather than Israel manipulating America. Not that I believe Israel manipulates America; it is simply a common prejudice here in SF Indymedia.
But even with potential right-wing anti-semitism, I also don't agree with left-wing anti-Israel bigotry, especially that annoying "end U.S. aid to Israel" campaign. I suppose if such a campaign ever succeeded, Israel would find another patron in China or India. But the Palestinians would certainly feel the economic crunch just as hard, if not harder. They will go home to their communities and they will be wealthier than their neighbours. They will begin to identify with what Israel offers them. There will be some reprisals, which is why it needs to be done on a large scale. The scale is VERY important for you need a large group, an entire new class in Palestinian society. When the reprisals come against the Palestinian workers, this is the beginning of victory. Israel will now be controlling and determining the nature of the conflict, instead of reacting and defending. The extremists will be on the defensive, guarding their own support base. And you can then say to Palestinians, "look, its not us keeping you from getting wealthy and having the things you want. It's Hamas keeping you in poverty. When you try to make a buck they punish you."
Okay, this is mostly the same point. And this is also where the reality of history is definately going to slam down on our heads.
First of all, granting universal citizenship to Palestinians will very likely end Israel's character as a Jewish state. I think many people want that. I don't, and for reasons that I think I've described before. And I think many Israelis also do not. In a way, it would defeat the whole point of Zionism, which is that Jews could never have the security of freely practicing their culture unless they were the majority of their own nation. Jews as a minority in a secular Israel/Palestine, and then maybe they'd be as well off as Jews in Morocco... or as poorly off as Jews in Iraq. (Are there any left in Iraq?)
The alternatives aren't pretty, but the best one still seems to me to be a second, Palestinian state. If this doesn't work out, some very hard right-wing Israelis have been talking about transfer. No one's going to want that to become a mainstream idea, and I'm not going to defend it here. But if there's no deal for a two state solution, you'll probably hear that proposed as an alternative.
I do not believe Israel will ever commit genocide, however.
Now on the other points, I just received a very interesting article about the situation of the Palestinians during the original Israeli occupation... that is, between 1967 and the Oslo accords. Israel did put in some investment into the Palestinian villages, and many Palestinians began to commute into Israel for work, about 25%. However, Israel did not attempt a cultural assimilation, and left schools and media mostly alone, concentrating on security matters. I think the idea was that with some economic incentive, Palestinians would turn to more peaceful philosophies. But whereas the United States generally recreated the media culture of post-war Japan, Israel left the Palestinians to their own devices, which maintained an anti-Jewish/anti-Israel tint.
Perhaps if Israel or other democratic nations guided the territories towards a moderate democracy, things might be easier now. But instead, the PLO pretty much gained control hands down when Arafat became the leader of the PA after Oslo. And the PLO's goal- "liberate all of Palestine" (i.e. conquer Israel) remained the same. This is likely what made the intifada so much more devastating. With Palestinians accustomed to working in Israel, the sudden roadblocks to keep out terrorists brought more damage to their economies than would have been the case if the Palestinian economy was self-contained.

I think its likely quite true that Israel's policy was schizophrenic. That happens a lot with Democracies that change leaders and parties all the time. Look at the United States. Actually, many Jews are making Aliya right now, yes, even in the middle of the intifada, with bombs going off everywhere. In the last few years, so many Jews have immigrated from the Ukraine, it makes Moses and Exodus look like a footnote.
I certainly have no problem increasing Palestinian education and employment, and I would dare propose two suggestions that may make such an increase more applicable to peace.
1) Help them develop a self-contained infrastructure. It would reduce a lot of problems if Palestinians could find good work in the territories, rather than commuting to Israel. Entrance to Israel could lose its importance. If Arafat was doing stuff like this, rather than stuffing all the foreign aid to Palestine into terror bombs and his swiss bank accounts (now reported to be about $1.3 billion dollars) then they'd have a lot less suffering.
2) More controversial, I think the Palestinians will need to undergo some cultural reforms in their education practices. If they stop teaching anti-semitism to their children, stop teaching adulation to suicide bombers, admit that Israel is here to stay and not a "cancer to be cut out" then this would also go a long way towards peace. I wish all the Arab nations would do this. It would make me sleep easier at night.
Another thought that's been occuring to me is a discussion I once had with a friend of mine, on whether or not the civil rights movement significantly improved the lives of African Americans. My friend's argument was that though pre-MLK, blacks were unwelcome in white society, among themselves they had full communities with their own schools, preachers, teachers, doctors, and so forth. But by letting them into full society, they competed in a pool where they still suffered discrimination, while their own tightly knit communities began to fall apart. Recently, i read an essay about Zionism by Albert Einstein, and he said pretty much the same thing; when the Jews lived in ghettos, at least they were all part of a tightly-knit community, but when they began to leave the ghetto after Napoleon and the like, they found discrimination waiting for them while their national identity weakened... until Zionism strengthened the bonds.
I don't know if I agree or disagree with this argument, but it is coming to mind when I consider the problems inherent of having a class of people commuting to work to a nation that A) They are hostile to and B) Is in turn hostile to them.

JERUSALEM -- On the surface, the bill that Muhammad Baraka recently submitted to the Israeli Parliament seemed innocuous enough.
Baraka, an Israeli-Arab legislator, is proposing to anchor in law the seemingly factual assertion that Israel is a democratic and multicultural state.
Parliament's legal advisers, however, considered the bill so subversive that they recommended that it not even be sent to the floor for debate. Baraka's proposal, it seems, cleverly omits a sacred point: that Israel values one culture above all others. It is, after all, the Jewish homeland, established on a policy of ethnic preference to redress the enormity of the Holocaust as well as millennia of wandering.
Whether Parliament lets multiculturalism bill proceed and be voted down remains to be seen. But inside and outside the legislature, the debate is already raging, a national soul- search about Israel's identity and just how central Jewishness -- much less Judaism -- should be.
Most recently, the debate has been ignited by the release of new statistics showing that an increasing percentage of recent immigrants are non-Jews. It has been fueled, though, by a confluence of factors, including the increasing civil rights demands of the growing Israeli-Arab minority and the rise of a younger generation that questions whether Israel should evolve into a "post Zionist" country.
An old idea has been revived -- to tighten the generous Law of Return that guarantees citizenship to almost anyone with Jewish roots or spouse. But this time, it is not only the rigorously Orthodox who are questioning the law.
Immigration experts, liberal Orthodox, secular immigrants and mainstream newspaper editorialists are proposing that the supposedly sacrosanct law be re-evaluated.
"The Law of Return is discriminatory," said Zehava Gal-on, a member of Parliament from the leftist Meretz Party. "It discriminates between Jews and non-Jews. I can accept that after the Holocaust, it was kind of a necessity. But maybe after 51 years, we are not in the same situation, and we don't need to run our country based on such undemocratic laws."
In a recent cabinet meeting, Ehud Barak, the prime minister, slammed the table and said the law would never be discussed -- much less amended -- during his term. It is a discussion that unnerves even many who think it is valid.
"It's a very serious and very legitimate discussion, but we have to be very careful," said Natan Sharansky, the interior minister and leader of the Russian immigrants whose arrival during the last decade has altered Israel and brought many non-Jews to the country. "There are people on the left and right who will take advantage. On the left, you have people who believe Israel to be a country of all its citizens, enough of this Jewish business. On the right, the religious right, you have people who say Israel should shut its door to those who are not Jewish by Jewish law."
New statistics, released in late October, showed that in the last year, for the first time, more than half the immigrants to Israel were not Jews according to Jewish law. That is, 53 percent did not have a Jewish mother or had not undergone a conversion. Since the great wave of immigration began in 1989, about 208,000 of the 1 million immigrants from the former Soviet Union have not been Jewish, according to official data.
This disclosure merely confirmed what many Israelis have considered obvious, and it reinvigorated a backlash against the Russians. In mid-November, a rigorously Orthodox member of Parliament referred to Russian immigrants as "a fifth column," which was an epithet that used to attach itself only to Israeli Arabs -- who, like the Russians, make up one-sixth of the population.
Then, in Bet Shemesh, an immigrant town with tensions between religious Moroccans and secular Russians, a political rally organized by the rigorously Orthodox Shas Party to protest the proliferation of "pork shops" escalated into an anti-Russian fest.
A prominent Shas rabbi, David Benizri, charged that the Russians were "flooding Bet Shemesh with abomination" and "defiling" Israel with their "pornography, prostitution, disease and alcoholism."
While apologizing the following day, Shas's leader, Eli Yishai, took advantage of the moment to announce an assault on the Law of Return. Unlike the case in the past, though, forces outside his community were also concerned, in a less vitriolic way, about the implications of a growing non-Jewish population: intermarriage, for one, and dilution of the Jewish character of the state.

As far as your solutions re Palestine, the UN needs to go in there for 2 main reasons, if a state is to be established. One, to build the infrastructure and develop a proper ruling body which will be accountable. Two, to ensure law and order - imagine all the things that could go wrong. Imagine an assault by your neighbours during the transition, or any of a dozen bad scenarios. Not only this but it would calm Palestinian fears - which are something you would like to put a lid on, during transition. Hamas and other similar organizations DO have a sense of self-preservation and even if their members are mostly ideologues who would settle down after a fair deal, you will have a few who just cannot fit into civilian life ... It would almost be impossible to achieve a two-state solution without an international presence.

Your last comment about communities is very interesting and I will have to give it some thought. I can tell you one thing though; its not just minorities going through this. Community is just not a part of modern secular life. Even in Anglo America, Mayberry just doesn't exist anymore; its a joke. I'm Anglo and it's often perceived among us that minorities have an advantage in the regard that while they have preserved community and culture in some ways, we have not. Ours became the foundation of the global culture and we have less and less of a unique culture of our own. This point is actually the main thrust of white power groups claiming the need for a 'whites only' homeland. Personally I disagree. But I think here we are really hitting on an important current in modern life, the source of alot of political angst, war, ethnic tension, regional conflict, etc etc etc. Its late and this point I haven't thought about alot; its certainly something that I'm going to be cautious about and do alot of thinking on. Now that I'm thinking about it though, it seems to be something influencing just about every political current you can imagine. Even the left talks alot about 'community' and 'global culture'.
I think there are some differences. Israel is not exactly a country to worry about turning Communist during the Cold War, (though if they fall, they would turn Arab, which would likely be a similar drawback to America in the war on Terrorism) I think much of the US support for the puppet Arab despots is mostly related to oil. As a friend of mine mentioned, all Israel really needs to do to ensure her survival is wait for the Arab oil to run dry. Once it does, no one in America or Europe will care any more about the Arab nations, and Israel's more robust economy will become more important than the OPEC.
But my personal goal in defending Israel and Zionism is to combat the disgusting prejudice I've been finding in the bay area, much of which is perpetrated by Leftists and Socialists, that Israels (the Jews) are usurping America, or (the Jews) are perpetuating a second Holocaust. By the article cited, it seems another movement that may be getting popular... which I think you may agree with... is the belief that anti-Semitism is "over" and that though the right of return for Jews may have been reasonable for Israel in the aftermath of the Holocaust, now its utility is "used up." I don't personally agree with this. This was one of Herzl's realizations; that anti-semitism is eternal, and no matter how assimilated the Jews seem to be, it lurks in the corner, waiting for release. Yeah, it's a fatalistic philosophy, but considering Jewish history, its a hard one to deny.
Furthermore, anti-Semitism has been on the rise this year, particularly in France, some other European nations, and of course, the Arab world. If people really want Israel to be able to become secular, they should work at reducing anti-Semitism, not increasing it. Regretfully, I have yet to meet a Palestinian activists who is conscious of these trends, let alone cares about it. If they did, they would be a lot more careful than to use a swastika on their posters, or make troll articles on SF Indymedia. Every time I see one of them, it's another reason for me to say "Thank G-d for Israel."

As for the community thread, it's true that society has changed a great deal due to technology and globalization. Perhaps our yearning for community is no more than an infantile desire to return to the womb. insights into the Arab genetic make-up by conducting research on "Jews of Arab

concerned about the lethal potential of genetically-based biological weapons
that it has opened an investigation. Dr. Vivienne Nathanson, who organized the
research, said: "With an ethnically targeted weapon, you could even hit groups
within a population. The history of warfare, in which many conflicts have an
ethnic factor, shows how dangerous this could be." A spokesman for Britain's

According to the Sunday Times, Israel is trying to identify genes carried only by Arabs that could be used to develop a biological weapon that would harm Arabs but not Jews. The newspaper attributed its report to unidentified Israeli military and Western intelligence sources. It said Israeli scientists are working to create a genetically modified bacterium or virus that only attacks people who carry certain genes.
The newspaper said the weapon is seen as Israel's response to the threat of chemical and biological warfare from Iraq and could be spread by air or through the water supply. According to the report, researchers have pinpointed "a characteristic in the genetic profile of certain Arab communities, particularly the Iraqi people."
Officials at Porton Down, Britain's biological defence facility, had agreed such weapons were theoretically possible, the newspaper said.
In Israel, David Bar-Illan, a senior aide to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, rejected the report, saying such stories only proved "that there is no limit to human gullibility and also no limit to the desire to sell newspapers."
Asked if he was denying the report, Bar-Illan told The Associated Press, "This is the kind of story that does not deserve denial."
In Cairo, Ahmed Mostagir, a specialist in genetics, said the production of such a weapon is theoretically possible, but it will not be able to distinguish between Arabs and Oriental Jews.
"This new technology is an offshoot of genetic engineering," Mostagir said. "If the British newspaper's report is correct, this means that Israelis have made extensive studies on Arab and Jewish genes, and reached the conclusion that the Arabs have certain genes which the Jews do not have, and which could be targeted by a genetically-engineered virus."
Mostagir explained that 99.5 per cent of the genes of all the peoples of the world are identical. Genetic differences do not exceed one half per cent. But since many Jews have Arab origins, "they too will be victims of this horrible ethnic bullet," he said.

Maj. Gen. Abdel-Rahman El-Hawwari, a strategy expert, told Al-Ahram Weekly that Israel ranks fourth among the world's nations in the production of biological and chemical weapons. El-Hawwari noted that while Israel is outspoken about its nuclear arsenal, it prefers to keep silent about the biological and chemical weapons it possesses, fearing that if news leaked out it might fall victim -- like Iraq -- to international pressure.
He also expressed scepticism that a biological weapon capable of distinguishing between possible targets on ethnic grounds could be developed. Like Mostagir, he also pointed out that many Israelis are themselves of Arab origin.
What we do know, El-Hawwari went on, is that Israel is enforcing a new strategy based on "penetration". This includes smuggling drugs into enemy and potential enemy countries and "polluting the enemy's environment with germs that can be planted in soil and irrigation water," he said.
Maj. Gen. [retr'd] Hossam Sweilam, another strategy expert, argued that "instead of running after news stories, we should focus on the real danger, which is a military plan recently approved by the Israeli cabinet, outlining Israel's military programme up till the year 2010." This plan also outlines Israel's potential "future combat zone," extending from Pakistan in the east to Morocco in the west, and from the central Asian republics in the north to South Africa and the southern entrance of the Red Sea in the south, he said.
Sweilam explained that Israel will have to coordinate with Turkey in any future military operations against Syria and Iran, with Ethiopia and Eritrea in the Red Sea, and with India and Sri Lanka in any operations against Pakistan.

This isn't that hard of a concept. Just reverse the situation. Would it be logical to say then that all Jews should be held accountable for such an attack? You set the moral precedent, and it will be held for a long time in conflict. pärm hos f.d. Invandrarverket. Han flydde till Syrien 1983. I samma år begick
han liknande brott där och flytt vidare till Europa genom förfalskade papper,
pass, intyg. Sverige som var ett enda landet som accepterade den kriminiella
tjuven och medföljande gruppen som "nysvenskar"!!! Nedim Dagdeviren fick tur
att få jobb trots han aldrig studerade i Turkiet som skulle utbildas till
bibliotekarie osv d.v.s. hans betyg var också förfalskade som alla andra
skurkaktiga medföljande tjuvar. Skurken är ordförande i biblioteket och hans
kålsupare driver liknande centrumet i Uppsala som förråder vårt land. Keko Izol

Uppsala Nya Tidning/artikelserien om "Bergman-affären": Jan Bergman är Professor
i religionshistoria, egyptolog, text-exeget mm. som arbetar vid Uppsala
university. Bergman var inkallad som försvarsvittne i samband med
Rami-rättegången 1989, och vittnade bl.a. om hur judendomen använder sig av
religiösa påbud för att legitimera bruk av våld och mord på icke-judar. Som ett
resultat av att han med sin kompetens och kunskap vågade visa på den judiska
rasismen, beslutade sig judarna för att försöka krossa Bergman, och drog igång
en kampanj, den sk. Bergman-affären, mot Uppsala university. En kampanj som
fortgår alltjämt idag, och vars syfte är att krossa Bergman, beröva hans
akademiska rang, smutskasta honom och sätta ett avskräckande exempel. Den
judiska arrogansen gav dock en motsatt effekt och väckte istället ett medvetande
inom Uppsala university om den judiska makten och hur den verkar. För mer info
bör man läsa Ahmed Rami's bok "Judisk Häxprocess" där Bergmans omtalade

kulturpersonligheter som Marie Feldtmann, Yvonne Rock, Philip och Jessica

Drottningholmsteatern. Hon är en av huvudpersonerna som förhandlar mellan
kriminella kurder att plasera på strategiska tjänster i immigrantvärlden.
Fascist Shimon Peres: Född 1923. Var "The Zionist Occupational Gang"s premiär

Sillbersky: Känd förfalskare, judarnas, tjuvarnas och massmördarnas
försvarsapparat. och författare till provokativa lögner, "Rosenbaum"-böckerna.
Känd från massmedia. Ställer självfallet upp som försvarsadvokat åt sin judiske

Ahlmark, se denne, som var den person som såg till att terroristen Wiesel fick
Nobels fredspris 1986 . Följaktligen hör inte Elie Wiesel till Radio Islams
vänner. En högintressant skrift, "Elie Wiesel- Ett falskt vittne" , av Robert
Faurisson finns bland Radio Islams material. En analys som fullständigt
demolerar "vittnet" Wiesels trovärdighet. Simon WIESENTHAL: Judisk s.k.
"överlevande", bl.a. från Mauthausen-lägret. Efter kriget har han fått mycket
publicitet när han började sin beryktade jakt på påstådda nazistiska förbrytare.
Wiesenthal är en väldokumenterad mytoman som vid flera tillfällen använt lögnen
