Port of Oakland Contract: Waterfront Workers Fight Back
The ILWU is facing a contract expiration that covers 10,000 West Coast longshore men and women faced with a threatened lockout by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) – and the danger that President Bush will invoke the Taft-Hartley Act in the event of a strike or slowdown. Present conditions are reminiscent of the famous general strike of 1934 when San Francisco Teamsters overruled their local president and refused to move cargo to or from the struck port.
