Yeah, well, as far as the bridge went, the protestors played by the rules but the cops didn't. If they break their own rules, we may be able to nail on it. Specifically, the cops stopped the demonstration before the permit was up.

definitely people who were there and had their freedom violated should take this through court or a police review board. Police love coming to court and writing affidavits. If they stopped it early, and they didn't permit press passes to be given to some forms of media- chosen along political lines, and if they permitted some people to cross with one type of flag while they didn't permit others to cross with another type of flag, then that is a clear violation of the first amendment.

I didn't see any evidence of the cops pushing anybody in the pics, nor do i see any evidence of what the age of the girl is. Could it be lies and hype from a small group of privligded folks who have nothing better to do than screw up traffic? Could be.

There *is* freedom in this (representative) democracy. Just not enough. But it's better than a lot of other states. I'm not a liberal, but I do wish that a few radicals would stop exaggerating that the situation is worse than it is.

Watch the first video. The cops themselves say they are forcing people back off the bridge at 1:30. The permit called for the demo to end at 2:00. In the video you can clearly see the police pushing protestors with batons, knocking a few to the ground in the process.

As for the protest causing traffic problems, it was the police that closed two lanes of traffic. The protest remained on the sidewalk as per the rules of the permit. Don't blame the protest for the actions of the police. Had they waited until 2:00, again as the permit stipulated, they would have been in the right to order the protestors from the bridge.

Not only that, but if drivers are going to be distracted by banners with simple slogans or flags without words, why do we allow advertising billboards whose sole purpose is to attract the attention of drivers using big colorful pictures?

Before WWII the Jewish population in Palestine looked a lot like any foreign European colonizers. The desire for the native population to kick the Zionists out at that time looked no different from the desire to kick the French out of Algeria or the British out if India. While there was (and is) anti-British feelings in India and anti-French feelings in Algeria, nobody would see those feelings as evil. Before WWII the desire of Palestinians to kick the Zionists back to Europe had nothing to do with anti-Semitism and everything to do with colonialism. If anti-Semitism existed at all in Palestine before WWII it was a result of a willingness to believe myths about colonizers rather than anything specific to Judaism itself.

After WWII there was a difference from the European perspective but not from the Palestinian perspective. The Holocaust took place in Europe and from the Palestinian perspective, the only result was an increase in the number of colonizers and their militancy. There was no logical reason for the Palestinians to feel guilty for the actions of the Germans.

When the UN presented a partition of Palestine to the Palestinians this was obviously unacceptable. It would be like someone presenting people in California a partition of California with a good number of Californians’ homes going to Iraqi Kurds. After all don’t all of the Kurds being attacked by the Iraqi State deserve a home.

When the Palestinians got the support of neighboring countries to take back their land, Israel beat these armies and took a larger percentage of the land than the UN promised. Many Palestinians were driven from their homes and took refuge in neighboring countries. Perhaps Israel would have agreed to the UN partition but for people now displaced from their homes, the question of who was to blame was irrelevant. People wanted their homes back. In 1967, it was therefore completely logical for Palestinians to see their goal as the recovery of their native land from a foreign occupier.

So getting back to the previous post:

Palestinians in 1964 had plenty to liberate. They had all of the land taken from them in 1949. This wasn’t a theoretical issue. There were people alive who have recently had their houses taken away from them and they wanted their houses back.

After 1967 Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza. The populations remained Palestinian but the goal of Israel was seen as ethnically cleansing this region too (even if this wasn’t really Israel’s goal at the time). If a neighboring country accepted refugees this would have been playing into the hands of those trying to make the West Bank ethically pure.

So getting back to the previous post:

Why should the neighboring countries help Zionists to ethnically cleanse the West Bank by encouraging Palestinians to leave?

Much of the Jewish population of Israel proper is now second and third generations from the original colonizers. People should not be held liable for the actions of their parents and grandparents. People can not go back to Europe since there would be nowhere to go. Unlike second and third generation colonizers in other states, the European colonizers of Israel do not have citizenship in the countries of their grandparents.

But, the old desire for Palestinians to take back their land should not be dismissed as anti-Semitism. It is still a similar desire to that of the Algerians to kick out the French of the Indians to kick out the British.

The conflict in Palestine can only be resolved when this basic conflict is dealt with; Palestinians had their land stolen from them and the Jewish population of Israel has nowhere to go. A resolution to this conflict will involve some compromises on both sides. The result may be a two state solution. Or it may be a secular one state solution. Issues of European anti-Semitism have little to do with this conflict since the real hatreds are based off land rather than religion.

I believe you misread the post. First off, the vast majority of Palestinians protest the occupation by peaceful demonstration. Others do indeed throw rocks at settlers' cars and the IDF. And yes, sadly, a small number have turned to more violent action, including suicide bombing. While I certainly do not condone violence, I can understand how they become so embittered that they feel it is their only option.

Oh how quickly we forget the history of the U.S. War for Independence. It was the colonists that routinely acted as "terrorists" against the Brittish occupation forces. While the Brittish stood in orderly ranks to fire their guns, the "cowardly" colonists used guerilla tactics: hiding in trees, firing from cover, using hit-and-run tactics. This was all condemed in Europe as "uncivilized," as if any war could be civilized.

This morning I went on line and read the story about this little girl, being arrested & hog tied and left on the ground. I'll tell you what if I was there and saw that asshole cop arresting her I proubly would have been arrested as well for spittig in his face. i´m excited to see that people marched on the golden gate bridge, but i´m surprised and saddened to see so few people turned out. here in berlin, for Bush´s visit last week, there were three days of protest with at least 50,000 people turning out to each of the big demos....really, the US has to do better than 150 people....

These officers are there to uphold the law and order. Sadly, they just did the opposit. The problem is that America must hate some group every now and then. It was the Native Americans (Red Indians), then the Jews, then the Italians, then the African Americans, now it's the American Muslims turn. This culture has to stop, and there should be more tolerance. Is this a culture that our German or British forefather brought with them? Now that we'v lived in North America with other cultures for so long, can we escape that?

But when does freedom end? When it begins to violate the freedoms of another human being.

She allegedly did this by striking at a police officer. If true, then she should suffer the consequences. If not true, she should be exonerated. We have a legal system that will play out in time.

Exactly. None of these videos show what happened just before the arrest. If this girl did strike out at the cop, then I have absolutely no sympathy for her at all. Maybe the spoiled brat learned her lesson this time.

We live in a free and democratic society that has rules protecting all, including those that have to enforce the rules.

I feel that war is not the answer to solve problems either, but what are your options when you have people who attack you and refuse to stop until they destroy you? And viewing all the footage available about this incident only shows me that the police were keeping a close eye on a potentially volatile situation and were forced to react to something. Unfortunately there is footage that has been left out as we are able to see the police setting up and then escorting the protestors off of the bridge. What happened in between? I think with all of the cameras that were there that there is no shortage of pictures so why do these protestors so favoringly choose to omit them? The police pushing the protestors off of the bridge? All of the pictures show them on one side of the rail with the protestors on the other. And the tactics used to take this 11 year old girl down are what you'd expect in a volatile situation. Believe it or not it minimizes the risk to everyone involved and reduces potential injury to the "suspect" and the officers, even though it looks violent. And why haven't I been able to find any pictures of these officers beating her. There is only one scientific way to tell how peaceful a religion is. Count how many people have died at the hands of its practitioners. Christians win hands down. They are the single most bloodthirsty demographic in history.

Three basic teachings of Christianity are "do unto others as you would have them do unto you," "when a man striketh you, offer him the other cheek," and "vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord." President Bush claims to be a Christian, and the U.S. was built upon Christian precepts. I'm tired of exaggerations on both sides of this question. Yes, it is a shame that an 11 year old needs to be controlled by the cops. The story is that she was angry and upset to the point where the cops couldn't handle it. The story wasn't a beating and being abandoned on the ground, face down. The person writing these stories just devalues the real stories and makes me doubt every story.
The young woman was in a grassy area on a slope with her head up and not just "on the ground" which makes it sound like something horrible.
Also, I looked through the pictures for pictures of cops beating people. I didn't see any. I have been beaten by cops and in demos where that was rampant. It just didn't look like that from these photos. I find myself trusting even fellow people on the left less and less because of the CRAP that is written to "make a point." The impact on me of articles like this is to make me take the left less and less seriously over time. There are other areas where I find the truth so distorted that I cannot, in my own conscience, go along with "the program." I don't think it is necessary to write bullshit in order to make a point.

I hope that the girl arrested is standing up for what she believes in. It was hundreds of peaceful protesters getting arrested that brought civil rights to this country. Good for her. I don't see her complaining about being arrested.
Unfortunately, I think she is mistaken in her protests. Islam is a religion of hate. Maybe Christians are in second place behind communists for murdering the greatest number of people, but the Muslims are making up for lost time as quickly as they can; Islam is a new religion! Palestinian Jews have every right to live in the land they have lived in for millennia. They are willing to share it. But the Arabs want the whole place for themselves. i think its such a shame that so many people can be so quick to judge. how can you generalize like that and say anyone who follows the teachings of islam is evil or violent or is against the western world. islam, the way i was taught it IS peaceful and there are a few individuals out there who misinterpret important meaning from the koran. they do not represent the real muslim faith. and any christians or jews out there our religion is not so different to yours, it has few differences in essence and it is the same god. there is no need for this hatred caused by ignorance. you cannot pass judgement on things you do not know.

Greetings, this is addressed to the writer who expressed concern that what she thought of as pro-palestinian protesters were in fact anti-semitic.

To pull out this "anti-semitic" race card at a time when the well-funded Isreali's are murdering, detaining, raping and culturally destroying the Palestinians is a dreadful mistake.

First of all, more Palestinians are actually semitic than are Isrealis. Many Isrealis are white and more of European descent. The ashkanazi Isrealis (that seem perfectly happy to conduct genocide against brown-skinned people) deserve plenty of criticism and resistance right now - BECAUSE OF THEIR ACTIONS.

Fascism and genocide are deadly and horrible trends no matter who they are directed at and no matter who is initiating them.
