I recently read in Understanding Special Operations And Their Impact on the Vietnam War Era - 1989 Interview with L. Fletcher Prouty Colonel USAF (retired) by Dave Ratcliffe... that the original American Flag was the old East India Company emblem (which was square). George Washington suggested the blue corner with stars on it. Betsy Ross decided to improve Washington's suggestions- she expanded the square into a rectangle and decided to turn the six-pointed stars into five-pointed stars.
