San Francisco Homeless Summit 2002

Herbst Theater
401 Van Ness at McAllister
near City Hall
Summit Hotline: 415-554-7910

This first-ever city sponsored homeless summit is a FREE, all-day event to bring together "homeless people, service providers, advocates, tourism and commercial interests, city department heads, elected officials and concerned neighborhood groups," per the press release issued by Rick Galbreath of Supervisor Chris Daly's office. (I presume the interested general public is also invited.) So come down and put your ideas and experience into the mix and don't let anyone shove more insanity down the throats of people who have been victimized more than enough. (And see, there is such a thing as a free lunch!)

The first-ever Homeless Summit aims to break the impasse on homeless policy by bringing together stakeholders from San Francisco's diverse communities -- including homeless people -- with the goal of determining both short- and long-term solutions to homelessness. The Homeless Summit's success will lie in its ability to mobilize both homeless people and broad economic interests to implement San Francisco's Continuum of Care plan.

Homeless people will be involved in all aspects of the summit, from the current planning process to media spokesperson roles. Over the past four weeks, some 80 volunteers representing a broad spectrum of organizations and individuals (including homeless and formerly homeless people) have participated in more than 25 meetings, representing approximately 4000 volunteer hours to ensure the first-ever Homeless Summit's success.

Bob Prentice, San Francisco's first Homeless Coordinator under Mayor Art Agnos, will provide a historical perspective on San Francisco's homeless program in his keynote address.

The Summit program provides many opportunities for participation by attendees in the form of interactive workshops on key issues of homelessness. Topics covered in workshops will include:

o Neighborhood Responses to Homelessness

o Under-served Communities: Homeless Families, Youth and Seniors

o Job, Income and Education

o Human and Civil Rights and Civic Responsibilities

o Building Consensus: Strategies to Increase Federal and State Resources

o Affordable Housing Strategies

o Current Legislative Strategies and The Continuum of Care

o Healthcare and Treatment Programs for Homeless People

o The Role of Nonprofit Service Providers

o Successful Models in Major Cities

I think S.F.residents who are sympathetic to the homeless situation should be offered some type of
special tax break if they support solutions. By support I mean actively providing shelter. maybe the city can subsidize rent to those residents who take in homeless under certain restrictions/conditions. Maybe neighborhoods could pool rent money for their own rental property in their own hoods for their homeless.
Assign maintenance duties to homeless in exchange for living space supported by whole communities.
The more city residents that participate, would lessen the monetary burden of providing a helping hand up
to those who are unfortunate. The city should provide the incentive. In such an expensive city, many residents
with housing, would be glad to reap any relief they could if all it meant was doing their fair share.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
