California Higher Education Threatened by Globalization

by workerstruggle
This Saturday, members of the California Faculty Association(CFA), representing full and part time professors, lecturers, counselors, librarians, department chairs and coaches of the California State University campuses(370,000 students), will be demonstrating at the Marriott Hotel in San Francisco, site of the American Council of Education to protest the anti-labor attitude of Chancellor Charles R. Reed, who will be in attendance. C.F.A. needs our support on Saturday!
The C.S.U. Faculty Association has been working without a contract for over six months(since last July) because of the unabashedly corporate mindset of the chancellor and his steadfast refusal to negotiate with C.F.A. in good faith. The C.F.A. is now one step closer to the possibility of calling a strike and/or other job actions. This situation is a glaring example of the crisis California's system of higher education is finding itself in under the continueing onslaught of neo-liberal corporate policies( like those promoted at the recent W.E.F. meetings). What makes this convention of the American Council of Education even more insulting to C.F.A. and working people/families everywhere, is its choice of the Marriott Hotel for its site, a rabidly anti-union institution that defied its employee's vote to unionize in 1996. Therefore, the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Workers Union, Local 2, will be jointly sponsoring the demonstration by C.F.A. in solidarity.

It is urgent that C.S.U. students from San Francisco State, Cal State Hayward, San Jose State and campuses throught the Bay Area and the State of California come and support their faculty at this demo! Think about how important this is for you as students, the quality of your education, when you have a system where administrators are allowed to pull in six-figure incomes with one pay increase after another, while professors, lecturers and instructors are forced to sometimes teach multiple classes and commute to different campuses in order to make ends meet. How does this work load effect the quality of YOUR EDUCATION, especially when tuition keeps skyrocketing(to help facilitate pay increases for administrators? Because faculty sure aren't getting much!)?

Do you realise that over the last 5 years only ONE full-time professor has been hired in the ENTIRE 22 campus, 370,000 student population C.S.U. system?!? Students of the C.S.U.-your faculty need your support in their battle against the effects of capitalist globalization on their livelyhoods and your higher education! Please come to the Marriott Hotel in San Francisco this Saturday and support YOUR FACULTY and the hotel workers in their struggle against corporate globalization! We need to give a resounding NO to the corporate policies of Marriott, the American Council of Education, and Chancellor Reed!
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
