anniversary of Fil-Am War RALLY Tue, 2/5/02, 5PM 447 Sutter St SF

by Mario
February 4, 2002 marks the 103rd anniversary of the start of the Filipino-American war.
February 4, 2002 marks the 103rd anniversary of the start of the Filipino-American war. America's war to recolonize the Filipino people and effective military occupation of the Philippines actually lasted the full length of 1899 to 1916. During this period, more than 1.4 million Filipinos and Moros (mostly civilians) perished in the hands of US troops.

The last two weeks have seen more than 600 US combat troops to the Philippines, marking a new phase in America's interference in the internal affairs of its former colony in Asia.

To mark the bloody chapter of US aggression in Philippine history and to continue to protest the ominous entry of US combat troops to the Philippines, the Filipino Workers' Association (FWA), AnakBayan, First Quarter Storm Movement (FQSM) and many other activist groups will hold a picket/rally on Tuesday, February 5, 2002, 5:00 PM in front of the Philippine Consulate on 447 Sutter Street, San Francisco.

Please show up with your friends! Together let us stop the US from starting another US war of aggression! Yankee mercenaries go home! US troops out of the Philippines now! #

So, the 1898 War is not a very timely reference point..in fact, it's stupid.

Plus, I didn't hear the Philippines protest US troops during the Japanese occupation in WWII..did you? That event was just a little more recent.

What Filipinos want, whether residing in the US or like myself in Manila, (and I happen to be a Flipino-American halfbreed for the record), is recognition on a whole as a respectable people. The Spanish held this country for 350 years, after the Phil. became America's only power within the Pacific, and later on the Japanese would get their turn as well. To say the least, the colonial mentality it severe.

Bush asked GMA if she wanted help with the Abu-Sayyaf not too long ago post-September-11th when she visited NY. She declined. Well, now they're here.

There are various small groups protesting within Manila as well, but that isn't going to do much, or rather, hasn't yet. Now some English boys are on the way to join the Amerikanos as well.
