Bay Autonomen Collective?

by Drewd Soofi (druidsufi [at] mac.com)
An announcement for the formation of an autonomen group in the Bay Area.
Autonomen, or Autonomists is a term used for those that choose to live outside the norms of society in terms of housing, employment and transactions. In other words those that make a decision to not participate in the system. In terms of housing they usually set up squats, in terms of employment they usually set up collectives. Some set up community gardens, pirate radio stations, etc. If anyone is interested in organizing an Autonomen Collective in the Bay Area please meet at Espresso Bravo Cafe on Sunday, Dec. 30th and the following Sunday, January 6th, 2:00pm, the address, 663 Valencia St, San Francisco, near 16th St Bart Station.

For information on other autonomen initiatives go to http://squat.net or visit http://homesnotjails.org

This meeting will simply gauge whether there is sufficient interest in the Bay Area to start an Autonomen Collective. I personally see it being organized in an open and organic way rather than an secretive or elitist way, although certain elements will need to be discussed privately amongst participants. The Autonomen is non-sectarian, in other words although many are anarchists it is not an anarchist group, it is open to anyone interested in the autonomist lifestyle.

I don't know if an open meeting to see who wants to break the law with you is the most appropriate. What is appropriate is finding people who already want to do it and then start doing it, then find people who would be interested in joining up with and expanding that effort. Anything else seems suspicious to me and I think most people would find it suspicious.

ummm.... i watch anarchist make the same mistakes over and over again taking themselves so seriously that every little thing they do is being watched. you have a choice be open and inviting or be closed, small ineffective and secretive as far as illegal activity, no one said anything about that. why assume things we do are necessarily illegal. actually, do some research how many times has someone from homes not jails been arraigned in san francisco? If you aren't comfortable with open and inclusive but are for small elite exclusive then i guess things will remain pretty much the same.

Some things should be open and inclusive. Others should be small elite exclusive. No single model fits all missions.

maybe everyone should re-read where the poster says:

"although certain elements will need to be discussed privately amongst participants."

who would a thought such a simple appeal would be so controversial. what's next calling others not real anarchists or outsiders?

Some interesting thought's. Probably not to many homeless folks lurking about on this site though.

Might be some taker's down in the subway tunnels
or in one of the chamber rooms deep in the sewers.

On the other hand, most homeless prefer not to be found by the non-homeless, and keep their squat's quiet, secret, and humble...Might be hard to find takers for the above from an on-line source that is probably out of reach from most homeless.....

I spent years being homeless, and like searching for gold, it is not so easy to find where the bulk of the gold is hidden in the lode...Gold is where you find it...Same for the homeless...Their everywhere....In cars, offices, rooftops, bushes, alleys, subways, sewer chamber rooms, waiting rooms, bus stations, garages, construction job sites, and especially in the condemned buildings, or boarded up houses in the burbs...

Not a stable crowd...Good luck....
