Southern Humboldt Peace News

by Paul Encimer (encimer [at] hotmail.com)
update on peace activities in the sohum region
The Southern Humboldt peace community resurfaced when 30 people vigiled for a couple hours in downtown Garberville on Sept. 19th. The support shown by occupants of passing cars was steady and positive. Southern Humbldt/Northern Mendocino is a community deeply suspicious of the integrity of the federal government. A few days before the Gulf War crisis, they were in fact invaded in the Greensweep operation masterminded by the war minister himself Dick Cheney.
Vigilers this time around held signs with such messages as "Justice Yes, War No," "Violence, Revenge, Then What?" and "Freedom Not FEMA."
The action received good coverage on the community -based FM KMUD and in the weekly paper "The Independent". After a brainstorming session held at the local Vets Hall on Sat. Sept 22, this media helped publicize the establishment of ongoing peace vigils in Garberville (noon, Wed) and Redway (Friday, 4:30to 6:30).
A Peace Committee was also established with biweekly meetings to organize for education, outreach and action. A Humboldt wide coalition meanwhile is focusing on mobilizing to SF for the Sept.29 peace rally and march using the Garberville Vets Peace Bus on another of its many peace transports.
