For
three dramatic years, backwoods activists and Valley residents have
successfully defended the old growth forested ridges of the Mattole
watershed--one of MAXXAM/Pacific Lumber\'s "Sacrifice Zones"
for the Headwaters "Deal." This last winter and spring,
campaign efforts to save these precious wildlands, through both
legal challenge and direct action, were met with unprecedented silencing
efforts. After a 160-day massive road blockade, 58 people have been
arrested, receiving torture tactics and stiff sentences for minor
charges--one woman who refused probation is being held for 120 days.
MAXXAM\'s Pacific Lumber is further threatening participating activists
with a S.L.A.P.P. suit (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation)
designed to muffle our strong voices. Let us come together and show
the support of our caring community.
We
are holding this auction as an emergency fundraiser in order to
keep up the momentum in our effort to defend the beautiful, fragile
forestlands of coastal California and the Mattole watershed. Money
raised will be split among lawsuit costs, forest defense, outreach,
education and restoration opportunities. All activism this supports
will be volunteer.
