ACLU Letter to City Council RE Police Spying Policy

Here is the letter from the ACLU to the Santa Cruz City Council's Public Safety Committee. It acknowledges that the city's own police auditor determined that the SCPD violated the rights of parade planners and urges the council to draft a strong policy that protects people's first amendment rights.

In spite of that, we expect the PSC to try to ram through a policy that gives the SCPD the right to do what they are already doing. Come to the Public Safety Committee meeting Wednesday night at 7pm to demand that the council do the right thing.

Be prepared to make a public comment to the Committee. Insist that the policy they create puts limits on police power and gives strong and explicit protections for first amendment activities and people's civil liberties.
