Hunger Strike begins to oppose HR4437
An opening rally and march kicked off this next week of actions against federal proposals that target immigrants. The legistation HR4437, proposed by Senator Specter and Representative Sensenbrenner, will destablize working class people and communities of color by criminalizing undocumented immigrants as felons, and threatening to charge their families and other supporters with charges of "aiding and abetting a felon." If passed, this legislation will impact more than 12 million individuals, plus community organizations that service immigrants.
Throughout the day people continued to gather in opposition to the racist criminalization of immigrants and immigrant supporters. Between a rally in front of the San Francisco Federal Building and a march from the Mission District to the Federal Building in the evening, over 150 supporters ammassed in solidarity with the hunger strikers.
