Sacramento Mother Joins Cindy Sheehan in Crawford, Texas

Sacramento mother Karen Bernal left Friday August 12 to join Vacaville Mother Cindy Sheehan in her vigil outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas.

Karen's husband, Bill Lackemacher, will join other local supporters of Sheehan's mission to get the U.S. out of Iraq, this Saturday, August 13, at a 6:30-9 pm demonstration at 16th & Broadway in Sacramento. This demonstration is one of several being held across the country in support of Cindy Sheehan.

"Cindy is saying what millions of Americans want to say, we want this war to end," stated Lackemacher, "and we felt it was important for Karen to go to Texas and support Cindy."

Locally, Ms. Bernal is the chair of Sacramento for Democracy. She is working with a Sacramento coalition effort to get the Sacramento City Council to adopt a resolution asking Congress and the President to immediately withdraw U.S. troops and bases from Iraq.

On Tuesday, August 9, Bernal attended the Sacramento City Council meeting along with a chamber full of other supporters of the resolution. Ms. Bernal was among a small group that was permitted to address the Council.

“Cindy Sheehan sets an example for all of us, including our city council," said Bernal. "This war, a war based on lies, is morally indefensible. It robs the city of critically needed money as well as destroying lives. We are obligated as Americans and Sacramentans to stand up and say end this war now.”

For more information about the local action, contact Stephen Pearcy, 916-444-8314; stephen.pearcy [at] sbcglobal.net. Karen Bernal can be reached in Texas at 916-812-1793.
