A Valentine for Gavin
ok, this is weird- i thought it was just one of those "thank gavin" things, but it is more than that- they want people to give money to his (reelection?) campaign?
A valentine for Gavin
February 8, 2005
Dear Members and Friends of the LGBT Community,
This past year was one of the most difficult - and most exhilarating - in the modern day political history of the LGBT community.
We have been under constant and hateful assault from the radical right wing and, sadly, we have seen some of our 'friends and allies' run for cover. As we witnessed lesbian and gay couples being married, our basic rights in many other places were being challenged. In over eleven states, we have seen state constitutions amended to deny us marriage equality. And in eight of those states, the constitutions were amended to deny us civil unions and domestic partnerships as well. Meanwhile, the President of the United States continues to push for a constitutional amendment to deny us the right to civil marriage.
These attacks have not gone unchallenged. While there have been dark days, there have also been shining moments. And there have been truly remarkable heroes.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has not flinched in his decision to grant us full equality in the moving and powerful Valentine's Week movement that he started.
The Mayor has been attacked in his own party. He has been challenged in the courts. This heroic individual has placed his own political future in jeopardy in order to advance our quest for equality. We cannot let such an incredible friend stand alone.
The Mayor has a significant debt to pay off from his last campaign - and we should support this extraordinary, principled, and courageous individual.
As individuals who represent a wide spectrum of the LGBT community*, we urge you to send a contribution to a man who has proven his friendship to this community. The first anniversary of the San Francisco marriages is rapidly approaching. This year let us be the ones to give the Mayor a Valentine's Day present.
Please support justice and equality by contributing to Mayor Gavin Newsom today.** Simply complete and return the form at the bottom of the page or click below to contribute online.
Thank you and Happy Valentine's Day.
