Tranny March Makes its Debut

by Liz Highleyman (liz [at] black-rose.com)
Friday, June 25, marked the debut of the first Tranny March in San Francisco, and quite likely anywhere.

Some 2,000 transgender people and their friends and allies -- joined by some 100 Critical Mass bicyclists -- came out Friday evening to show their support for transgender rights and equality. When the march reached City Hall, and altar was set up to memorialize those lost to anti-trans violence. The crowd demanded justice for Gwen Araujo, a transgender teenager who was killed in 2002 after it was discovered that she was born biologically male. A mistrial was declared Tuesday after a deadlocked jury failed to convict Araujo's killers; prosecutors have said they would retry the case.
