The tortured logic of John Yoo, Neo-con apologist
On Monday nite's PBS Newshour, UCB Law Professor John Yoo used the pretzeled logic of the Bushwhacked Cabal to justify the U.S. policy on torture and systematic mistreatment of captured suspects in Iraq & Afghanistan. In doing so, he only succeeded in exposing himself as the loyal legal pimp for the Neo-con Empire.
First, John Yoo ducked the torture issue by insisting that the legal memorandum of Aug. 2002(which he co-authored as then DoJ counsel) only applied to prisoners from Afghanistan. He further shielded the White House 'dummy warhead' by claiming--with a straight face, notwithstanding all the evidence to the contrary at Abu Ghraib prison--that the Bush directed USA forces to treat all Iraqis by the Geneva convention rules.
Next, Yoo again tried to deflect blame on the Chieckenhawk-in-Chief, by using legal sophistry claiming that the U.S. Congress is responsible for 'implementing' the policy of acceptable prisoner treatment.
Finally, after his initial arguments were soundly shot down(metaphorically) by a Human Rights Watch staffer on the Newshour episode, and in the worst Neo-con rationalization, Yoo simply asserted that the President has unlimited power(over Congress & indeed any international law or treaty) to simply decide on all policy matters during a War. For good measure, John Yoo even threw in a hypothetical example of the need to extract info from a captured suspect, who may(or may not) harbor details of a major 'terror' attack on U.S. citizens.
Any reasonably observer could see the tortured logic of this legal prostitute, who has sold his soul to the Torture Devils residing in the White House.
