Saturday in Richmond
Fresh off an emotional and significant victory that stopped the execution of an
innocent man, Kevin Cooper, the Free Kevin Cooper Committee for a California
Moratorium (aka, Save Kevin Cooper Committee) will host a special community and
media event this Saturday, 21 February 2004, beginning at 4:45 pm. The location
is the Neighborhood House of North Richmond, 305 Chesley Avenue, Richmond.
Committee members will provide an update on the extraordinary case of Kevin
Cooper, who has been on California's death row for almost two decades; and came
within 3 hours and 42 minutes of being executed by the state last week. Leaders
will also issue a declaration calling for an immediate moratorium on the death
penalty; and a need to abolish all state-sanctioned murders.
Our special guest speaker will be Jim Brown, Founder/President of the uplifting
youth empowerment program, Ameri-I-Can. Brown may be best known as a National
Football League Hall of Famer, actor and humanitarian. Prior to the event,
Brown and others will be visiting Stanley "Tookie" Williams, another prisoner
on San Quentin's death row. (Williams, a reformed gang member, co-founder of
the Crips, author of nine children's books as well as a four-time Nobel Peace
Prize nominee) is the subject of the movie "Redemption," which will be aired
nationally this 11 April 2004 at 8:00 p.m. on the FX Cable Network, and he will
also be featured in a segment on CBS' "60 Minutes" in early April.) Also
participating in the event will be a number of Bay Area spiritual and community
leaders, and several well-known elected officials.*
