MARRY-IN: Come to SF City Hall, Feb. 16
Monday (Feb. 16) may be last day of historic SF marry-in. Freedom-seekers should gather at City Hall from 10AM to 4PM.
SF Marry-In: Monday may be last chance
Dear freedomseekers,
On the damp chilly afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 15, I walked thru Civic Center Plaza toward SF City Hall. Noticing some folks in the Plaza holding signs, across the street from City Hall, at first I assumed they were supporters of queer freedom. Getting closer, I realized they were Muslims, denouncing "homosexuality".
I shouted at them, "You fascists! You ask us queer people to speak up for the civil rights of Muslims, and we do so! Then when we queers seek civil rights, you turn around and stab us in the back!"
Bystanders applauded. None of the Muslims replied, at least not audibly. I crossed the street, and there-after ignored the medievalists.
On the City Hall side of Polk Street, I saw two groups. A line of would-be spouses were sitting on the sidewalk, preparing to camp overnight. Near the door, a crowd of well-wishers and media persons greeted each newly-married couple who exited from City Hall.
Over on Van Ness Avenue, there was a third group -- another line of would-be spouses waiting to enter City Hall, plus their fans.
(I couldn't understand how couples decided whether to camp on Polk Street or to wait in line on Van Ness; nor could I guess which tactic was more likely to succeed.)
Leaflets around City Hall announced: "Welcome to the historic San Francisco 2004 MARRY-IN! Make families, not wars! February 12 thru ___? "
WHAT'S NEXT
Monday's Chron [Feb. 16] says the City expects to be able to process another 400 licenses and ceremonies on the Monday holiday, from 10AM to 4PM (today).
** I hope well-wishers will again gather to cheer the newly-weds as they exit, despite drizzle. (Did the fascists pray for rain?) Wear a raincoat, and/or bring an umbrella. **
On Tuesday the 17th, City Hall's normal office hours resume at 8AM. However, courts also re-open. This means fascists may soon be able to halt San Francisco's Marry-In, by a Temporary Restraining Order, perhaps on Tuesday afternoon.
So if any more same-sex couples want to wed in SF, they should hasten to show up at City Hall on Monday, whatever the weather may be.
They don't need to be residents of SF, nor even of California.
