SF: Valentine's Day "marry-in"

Dear freedomseekers,

On Saturday, 14 February 2004, Valentine's Day, I watched the long line of same-sex couples waiting for hours to get marriage licenses at San Francisco's City Hall. The "marry-in" line was far too long to fit inside the building.

Outdoors, near the west entrance to City Hall (on Van Ness Avenue), I asked one gaymale couple how long they had been waiting, so far. "Four hours," they said, "and it's worth every minute."

Behind them, the line of loving couples snaked north to McAllister Street, east to Polk Street, and south to the Polk Street entrance of City Hall -- halfway around this large building.

"San Francisco Assessor-Recorder Mabel Teng said the city married about 450 couples on Valentine's Day, following a total of 680 marriages on Thursday and Friday," reports the S.F. Chronicle [Feb. 15].

The process continues on Sunday the 15th and on Monday the 16th. Forward progress may halt, at least temporarily, on Tuesday the 17th, when fascists will again seek to ban freedom.
