SF: LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY BRINGS MARRIAGE RIGHTS

Around noon on Thursday, 12 February 2004, I attended a rally for equal marriage rights, outside San Francisco's City Hall. At the time, I didn't realize how effective and historic that event would be.

In the evening, my friend Pam Feelin and I attended an excellent class presented by the Society of Janus (SOJ.org), on temporary piercings. Before the class began, leather activists made announcements -- including the good news that Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, matriarchs of the lesbian community, had been legally married, pursuant to a marriage license issued by the City and County of San Francisco.

Congratulations to the marriage rights movement, and to the elected and appointed officials of San Francisco.

They have significantly expanded human freedom in the United States of America. Quite fittingly, they did so on the birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who emancipated American slaves during an earlier struggle for civil rights.
