This is a classic essay which refutes the argument "in order to be tolerant, you must tolerate anything, including oppression." Marcuse dispells this notion by asserting that, in order to be truly tolerant, one might critically oppose oppression. For one to dismiss oppression in the name of "tolerance" is to actually engage in cultural repression, other wise known as "co-optation." The first big protests of the 2006-2007 school year at UC Santa Cruz took place on October 18th, 2006, the day the UC Regents came to visit campus. It had been five years since all 26 UC Regents came to UCSC.
