Oakland Citycouncilwoman Jane Brunner and Councilman Larry Reid
are planning a forum to address this issue of "youth

Burning Cole: NeoCons Try To Silence Dissent And Maintain Control of Academia
Neoconservatism is an elite calling. It thrives in think tanks, not union halls; its proponents want most of all to influence the powerful. No wonder Ivy League labels have always been important to neocons. This fixation on intellectual prestige explains the recent neocon uprising over the possibility that Juan Cole, scholar and blogger, would become a Yale professor. It was one thing for Cole to hold forth from the University of Michigan, where he has been a professor for twenty years. But Y...

All New Orleans Public School Teachers Fired, Federal Aid Channeled to Private Schools
Immediately after Hurricane Katrina hit, the Louisiana state legislature voted to take over most of New Orleans' public schools and effectively fire the 7,500 teachers who work in them. The city schools are now part of the state-run recovery school district and control of many of schools is being given to private charter organizations. We speak with a member of the United Teachers of New Orleans....

Dr. Martin Luther King Middle School in the Portola District in San Francisco
Solar is in and there is a lot of talk about it. It is nice when some organizations have been holding events to encourage youth to particpate and compete in events with Solar on their mind. It was fun going to such a Solar Event with the youth that were so well behaved and from San Francisco. The youth had a nice time but I must say the organizers put a lot of effort and fed the youth too besides giving me all some nice prizers. Kudos to the youth and the organizers....

School Beat: Last Day Of School
It's official. Today is the last day of the school year and most of us are breathing a sigh of relief. This was a tough one. Paired with continued successes throughout classrooms all over the City was enough heartbreak for all of us to have an ample portion. We all need and would like a bit of a summer vacation from the challenges around us. But, the upcoming year is already too packed with significant issues for us not to take advantage of the relative quiet of these interim months to become...

The Joseph Lee Gym is closed because it is under construction. Keeping in mind turf wars the YOUTH have no place to go to play. Now add to this problem other gyms shut down and the youth adversely affected. So the youth gather to talk and who do you think comes to round them? Who do you think comes to haress them? Who do you think is responsible to harm our youth by using dubious ploys? Now tell me do you really think Mayor Gavin Newsom - talks the talk or does he really walk the walk? What h...
