Protest at increased militarization on Hawaii island's Pohakuloa Training Area

by DLi
On Wednesday(June 28)morning, a lively group of 45 Hawaii Peace and Sovereignty activists protested at the gate of US Army's Pohakuloa Training Area's(PTA) groundbreaking for new and permanent construction. The new construction is part of increased military preparation for the Army's stated goal of "expeditionary" capabilities, which means enhancing U.S. Imperial interventions overseas and has nothing to do with "defense."
Especially galling is the fact that the Army has been bombing and firing live rounds(up to millions of rounds each year)at the training site, thereby desecrating the 'aina(land). atop Mauna Kea, the mountain many Hawaiians consider sacred. This is a clear case of gross and massive environmental destruction, perpetrated in direct support of U.S. Imperial missions abroad. (Not to mention that prior Depleted Uranium(DU) munitions that had been used at PTA had never been properly accounted for, and no comprehensive and independent air monitoring--as demanded by a 2008 Hawaii County Council resolution--has ever been conducted.) Hence, increasing numbers of concerned citizens from Peace and Sovereignty groups are demonstrating against the quickened pace of militarization on these Hawaii islands. Stay tuned for more active opposition in the months ahead. Peace & Imua!
