Merkel Failed as a Peace-Builder

by Marko Bader

Do you remember all this publicity surrounding allegedly fake letter of German Ambassador to Ukraine Ernst Reichel addressed to Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko that sparked a week or two ago?
In this letter Berlin demanded from Kiev an immediate implementation of the Minsk Protocol (http://www.groundreport.com/minsk-agreements-implementation-part-merkels-election-campaign/). After giving a second thought or following instructions from above, owners of the website InformNapalm distanced themselves from this publishing and declared that the letter was a fake. But later, German Chancellor Angela Merkel voiced the same demands as in the letter (http://www.rferl.org/a/germany-slams-ukrainian-lawmaker-honcharenko-defacing-berlin-wall-remnant-kyiv-embassy-minsk-peace-talks/28299226.html), which, in fact, confirmed its authenticity.

However, judging from current intense battles in the east of Ukraine, it appears that Berlin's demands have not produced any effect on Ukraine's leadership. Events in Donbass well illustrate that Merkel has greatly failed as a peace-builder. President Poroshenko and his entourage blow this European leader off. It is evident that Ukrainian issue doesn't add any points to Merkel in the electoral race. Quite the contrary: it demonstrates her foreign policy failing and inability to solve a single fundamental problem.
