Kaczynski's PiS supports Saakashvili in his presidential bid?

by Krystyn Czarnecki

According to public opinion polls more than half of Ukrainians believe acting president Poroshenko should step down. Indeed, it is very unlikely that he will serve his full term in office. Quite obviously, the associated question comes up: who's going to be the next president of Ukraine?

Well, actually answering this question now is just like reading the tea leaves. But we are free to suppose.

And of course candidacies of Yulia Tymoshenko and Mikheil Saakashvili here come first, as political punches like Oleh Lyashko and his kindred do not count.

At first sight of two strong candidates it is Yulia Tymoshenko who seems to be in win-win position. The ex-Prime Minister of Ukraine got extensive experience, people's support and relatively high ratings. But there is one big minus: the EU and the US have both practically closed their doors for Tymoshenko. It is that moment when people's love will hardly make her president without the support of the powerful.

Mikheil Saakashvili even after his resignation from the post as governor of the Ukrainian region of Odessa, on the contrary, enjoys now full scale support from the West. For instance in his interview to WBJ Observer Michal Dworczyk, the Head of the Sejm's Committee on Liaison with Poles Abroad and a member of the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) made it as clear as daylight that when it comes to renewal and reloading of power in Ukraine his country is looking forward to cooperate with such ambitious and promising politicians as Mikheil Saakashvili and Nadiya Savchenko.

No prizes for guessing here that to prove its leadership in Eastern Europe and strengthen position in the EU since now Poland and Kaczynski's PiS in particular will do its utmost to put the former Georgian president at the head of Ukraine.

Since all bets are off, the ex-governor of Odessa hold all the cards to leave his mark in the history of Ukraine.
