NBC Bay Area’s Bay Area Revelations Series Returns With Rebels & Revolutions

by Liza Catalan
Second Chapter Untold Stories of the Bay Area’s History in Leading Political and Social Movements
SAN JOSE, CA – (April 27, 2015) – NBC Bay Area today announced the return of its year-long documentary series – Bay Area Revelations – with Rebels & Revolutions premiering Saturday May 9 at 9 p.m. on NBC Bay Area. The one-hour film will examine the Bay Area’s history in leading political and social movements.

What began with free speech and flower power in the Bay Area rolled on to gay liberation, black power, drug culture, AIDS, assassinations, cults, critical mass, occupy and same sex marriage. Rebels & Revolutions tells the story of how the people in the Bay Area found ways to adapt, innovate and move forward through it all.

The program is told primarily through personal interviews with individuals who played a major role in these pivotal points in history, including Senator Dianne Feinstein, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Mayor Willie Brown, Dr. David E. Smith, Dr. Harry Edwards, Dr. Paul Volberding, Professor Bettina Aptheker, State Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, author David Talbot and San Francisco District Attorney and civil rights lawyer Terence Hallinan.

“Rebels & Revolutions will shed light on a significant time in the Bay Area’s history, weaving together stories that are not familiar to most,” said Rich Cerussi, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area. “Our intention with this second film in our Bay Area Revelations series is to is to reflect on those little known, powerful moments that were each responsible for sparking a revolution.”

In the program, viewers will learn how a conversation overheard while waiting in line at the coat check in the Capitol lit the fuse for gay marriage licenses to be issued less than a month later. They will see how the slogan, ”Health care is a right, not a privilege,” wasn’t born in the office of a highly paid speech writer, but in a converted dentist office called the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic. They will experience how a discussion on a park bench in San Jose inspired one of the most iconic images of the civil rights movement, and how a woman described as the “Margaret Dumont character in the middle of a Marx Brothers movie” put her own feelings aside and led San Francisco out of the darkness of assassination and AIDS.

Narrated by accomplished actor and Emmy Award winning narrator Peter Coyote, the Bay Area Revelations series tells the untold stories of the people, places and moments that have shaped the Bay Area into the unique region it is today. The first chapter of the series, The Super 7, premiered on February 1 and revealed events that led to seven Bay Area Super Bowl wins in two decades. Upcoming chapters airing throughout the rest of 2015 will explore how the Bay Area became one of the world’s best destinations for food and wine, Bay Area pioneers and how the Bay Area became the leading hub for high-tech innovation and development in the country.
