UC Santa Cruz Student Workers Announce Finals Week Strike
Student Workers represented by UAW Local 2865 at UC Santa Cruz announced a finals week strike to take place from June 7-17 to fight Unfair Labor Practices. UCSC's website lists finals as occurring June 9 –12 and commencement ceremonies scheduled for June 13–15.
According to an event announcement for the strike, which was posted on UAW 2865 UCSC's Facebook page, the University of California has been violating both labor law and "basic common decency" by:
• Arresting members and supporters for picketing
• Filing student conduct charges against members for picketing
• Tearing down union posters
• Threatening members with reprisal, saying if you strike, “you will not work in this department again”
• Insisting that legal strikes are illegal and having administrators inform our members of this
• Members at UCSD were docked pay out of proportion to the labor withheld at the last strike
The union has not mentioned if members will be picketing, or what other strike activities might be planned, but has noted that anyone unhappy with the decision to plan a strike for finals week should phone UC President Janet Napolitano: (510) 987-9074, UCSC EVC Alison Galloway: 831-459-3885, and Head of Labor Relations, Peter Chester: (510) 987-9919, because they are, "the people with the power to avert a strike".

Look, there are people GRADUATING in the spring who physically will not be able to if you close down the campus. There have been strikes upon strikes this year; perhaps you are demanding too much (unisex bathrooms, for instance). I realize I do not suffer your plight, but do not make your fellow students suffer. You will earn nothing but disgust, especially from people trying to graduate.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
