On July 2010, the Indigenous People of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), the Ma’ohi Rapu, staged peaceful, nonviolent protests by occupying public and private buildings in Rapa Nui that were unlawfully seized by the Chilean government. In December 2010, the Chilean government responded to these peaceful protests by shooting pellet bullets at the families and evicted them from their ancestral lands on Rapa Nui. The Ma’ohi Rapu have been fighting for their autonomy against the Chilean government since they were annexed by Chile in 1888. Today, the Ma’ohi Rapu send out a call to international communities who believe in the rights of Indigenous Peoples for self-determination to support them in their demand that Chile return ancestral land that it illegally seized and they also demand that Chile engage in peaceful negotiations.

THE FREE RAPA NUI DAY OF ACTION; Rally & Protest, will include speeches by Ma’ohi Rapu leaders, Pacific Islander community leaders, Native American community leaders, government and church officials, and other allies. A petition with signatures will be presented to the Chilean Consulate. Music, dance and poetry will be included. Educational materials about the Ma’ohi Rapu’s struggle for self-determination will be disseminated at the program.

*The FREE RAPA NUI DAY OF ACTION is organized by OCNC (Oceania Coalition of Northern California): A multi-generational coalition of Pacific Islanders from various community organizations working together for social justice*
