On Saturday February 14th, activists from Rising Tide Bay Area will be demonstrating outside the Bank of America building at 1 Powell Street, San Francsico, CA to protest the Bank’s record on issues of environmental and social justice.
Activists will engage in creative street theater to protest the Bank’s continued unjust foreclosures and evictions of working families and its funding of mountaintop removal coal mining. “By funding mountain top removal mining, the Bank is destroying American communities throughout Appalachia. The recent coal-ash spill in Tennessee vividly illustrates the devastation caused by coal mining,” according to Matt Leonard, one of the organizers of Saturday’s protest. Activists will serve the Bank a foreclosure notice for “failing to pay its social and environmental debts”. Bank of America, where’s your heart? Stop home foreclosures of working families and stop funding dirty forms of energy. Activists will also be closing their accounts with Bank of America and encouraging others to do the same.
This protest is being organized by Rising Tide Bay Area, the local branch of Rising Tide, an organization dedicated to fighting the root causes of climate change. Saturday’s attempt is part of a nationwide effort to “break up with Bank of America on Valentine’s Day” taking place in many cities across the country.
