Professors Support Service Workers Strikes at UC Schools

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 : University of California (UC) professors are in the process of circulating a letter to institution president Mark Yudof in which they express their support for the 8,500 service workers from the 10 central universities and five hospitals within the system currently on strike, La Opinion's Roger Lindo wrote Friday.
The workers commenced the strike Monday in order to protest the increasing gap between their salaries and those of institutions' upper administrators. The letter directly addresses what the professors agree is an injustice done to the workers by condemning those "enormous disparities" between salaries. In the letter they also explain that they can't, with clear consciences, imagine teaching at schools that espouse democratic ideals in theory but adopt "reprehensible" feudalesque systems in practice.
