A cement truck with a trailer apparently ran over a bicyclist at the intersection of Mission and Bay streets in Santa Cruz about 12:30 p.m. causing fatal injuries to the bicyclist.

Authorities are looking for the semi and the trailer, which kept driving and may not have realized the accident occurred.

Authorities say the cement truck clipped and ran over the bicyclist.

A witness who performed CPR said the bicyclist got caught under the second trailer of the cement truck and was likely dead when he got there, though he continued with resuscitation efforts.

The witness said the male bicyclist appeared to be in his 50s.

The witness also said it appeared the truck driver didn't realize what had happened.

The accident is on the eastbound lanes of Mission at the intersection on the east side. Eastbound traffic is being routed onto Bay.

This is the second fatal accident at the intersection in eight months. A Pacific Collegiate teacher riding a bike died on Aug. 7 at the same intersection. Four days earlier a female bicyclist was suffered major injuries when she was hit by a gravel truck at the same intersection.

Traffic is backed up for blocks. Police are asking Bayview Elementary students to take another route home. Parents are being asked to be aware of the traffic issues.

Can someone tell me how the City of Santa Cruz can push for really wide sidewalks with planters on Mission Street when you could use that space for roadway shoulders for bicyclists to use? The City seems to be in conflict with its own Bicyclist Transportation Management Plan by allowing development to occur without the development addressing real vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian needs. This is a really sad, sad thing that has happened and I hope that we can become decision makers to make the changes necessary to eliminate these types of travesties.
