Raging Grannies Try to Enlist (Fresno)

by George Hayduke
About 25 Raging Grannies try to enlist on Valentines day in Fresno.

Handing out Valentines Cards and singing songs 25 Raging Grannies try to enlist in the millitary today in Fresno. The Valentine's cards said;

Raging Grannies Against the War.
Take us instead.
We are grandmothers heartbroken over the enormous loss of life and limb in Iraq. Today, Valentine's Day, we are demonstrating our love for our country by enlisting in the U.S. Military to replace the young people who are too long deployed there. It is a Valentine's gift to our children and grandchildren all around the world.
We want our brave young people home. Alive and well.

After singing several songs the Grannies entered the military recruiters offices and tried to enlist. The Marines, Air Force and Army recruiters seemed so afraid of the Raging Grannies that they shut and locked their doors. The Grannies simply put their Valentine's cards through mail slots into the offices. Then many of the Grannies entered the Navy recruiters office and spoke with 2 recruiters. The Navy recruiters were polite and listened for about five minutes. The recruiters then asked the Grannies to leave.
As the Grannies left the building there were about 4 Fresno police officers outside. Apparently the Marines, Air Force and Army had to call in re-enforcements to oust the Grannies. Some of whom were using canes and walkers to get around. The Police said that the crowd could protest outside as long as they did not block the sidewalk.

On Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006 Women for Peace, Raging Grannies of the East Bay and San Francisco, Grandparents for Peace (Rossmoor), Women in Black, and the Mourning Mothers participated in a large rally outside the Oakland Recruiting Station at 2116 Broadway. There was lots of singing, marching, cheering, and the statement was read and repeated many times during the two hours we were there. Ronnie Gilbert and Faith Petric sang along with us as we cheered, "Our hearts are breaking, take us and bring our young ones home save and sound."
